GREENOUGH – Sunset School started classes Monday, Aug. 28 with eight students in grades K-8. This year they are starting a new pre-kindergarten program.
Supervising teacher Toni Hatten will be teaching fourth- through eighth-graders with teacher Hali Miller returning to teach kindergartners through third-graders. Ashley Mitchell will teach art again this year, Andrea Tougas will teach Special Education and Jo Schapley will be the visiting counselor. Sunset School is looking for substitute teachers, with or without teaching credentials.
Miller will teach the new pre-Kindergarten program that starts Oct. 3. The program will be all day Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a free program for four-year-olds that are Greenough residents or have a sibling currently enrolled at Sunset.
Hatten explained it is a great opportunity for the young students to learn how to follow procedures, get the experience of what it is like to be in school and learn basic colors, numbers, shapes and letters.
“We are doing it to benefit our community members but also the families that [already exist] at our school. It is an investment for us,” said Hatten.
Hatten said they are looking forward to collaborating with Ovando School again this year. The bus program will continue again this year.
