Instilling the Love of Fishing

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Kids Fishing Tournament returns to Seeley Lake Saturday, June 24. Children ages seven through 13 can expect fishing, lunch and prizes. The event is free for all participants.

The idea for the event started when Gary Ikerd was teaching a class “Hooked on Fishing” to the Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) fourth graders.

“We decided we needed to do something for the kids,” said Ikerd. He and his wife Martha McManus started the fishing tournament in 2002.

Boats will be ready to load at the Big Larch Campground boat ramp starting at 7 a.m. Children are asked to bring a rod, reel, tackle (optional), life jacket and dress in layers. Boats will be staffed with experienced fishermen.

Weigh-in starts at 11 a.m. at the boat launch. Parents are asked to start picking their children up at 11 a.m.

Everyone is invited to reconvene south of Cory’s Valley Market for a barbecue lunch complete with hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings. Families of participants are invited to attend.

Following lunch will be the awards ceremony starting between 12:30-1 p.m. First, second and third place for the most overall weight caught will be announced. Participants will be eligible for additional prizes as well.

Those planning to participate are encouraged to register prior to the event to ensure enough boats are available for the tournament. Applications are available at Cory’s Valley Market and Rovero’s. Participants can also register Saturday morning between 7-8 a.m. at Big Larch Campground boat ramp.

If interested in volunteering or driving a boat for the tournament call Ikerd at 677-4254.

“We just want it to be a fun day for everyone,” said Ikerd. “This is the kids’ day.”
