SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Ranger District will be closing portions of the Lake Alva Campground for approximately four weeks beginning June 2 to safely remove dead and dying trees. Many of the trees in the campground have been infected by spruce budworm, a native insect that defoliates some tree species. Defoliation has caused significant tree mortality in the campground.
Lake Alva Campground is located approximately 11 miles north of Seeley Lake and situated on the east shore of Lake Alva. The work at the campground will be done in phases, so that campsites are always available to the public over this period.
The tree removal work will be done in two phases to minimize impacts to the public. The first phase of the work is expected to begin June 2 in the Loop One camping area. While that work is being done, the Loop Two portion of the campground will remain open.
The Loop Two work is expected to begin approximately June 19 and last several weeks.
Other nearby campgrounds available to the public while this work is ongoing include Rainy Lake, Lakeside (also on Lake Alva), Lake Inez, Big Larch, Riverpoint, and Seeley Lake campgrounds.
Ranger District officials hope to complete the work as quickly as possible.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public while this work is completed,” said Rachel Feigley, Seeley Lake District Ranger. “Our objective is to remove unwanted fuels and create a safer camping environment for our Forest users.”
