Ten Blackhawks to Continue Track Season at State

FRENCHTOWN-Ten athletes from the Seeley-Swan High School track and field teams will extend their season next week at the Class C State Championship in Laurel, Mont.

Nine Blackhawks placed in the top five in their events at last week's Western C Divisional track meet, the qualifier for the state meet. The boys and girls 4x100m and 4x400m relays also qualified.

"We got a lot of kids to state, more than I think we have in the past," said Coach Mike Haines. "It was pretty impressive but we can get better."

The Lady Blackhawks repeated as Divisional champions, edging out second place Arlee 67.5 points to 65. The boys finished runner up to Ennis.

Standout senior Alex Bohlman had the most dominating performances at the divisional meet scoring more than half of the Lady Blackhawks' points.

She won the 100-meter, 200-meter and set a Class C divisional record in the javelin with a throw of 145 feet, 4 inches. Bohlman also finished fourth in the 400m and fifth in the high jump.

"I didn't think I was going to do that well in the 100 to be honest," said Bohlman.

Bohlman will be competing in all five individual events next week in addition to racing both relays.

"The 100, that's definitely going to be tough and the 200," said Bohlman. "Basically everything. It's going to be a tough year."

Bohlman will be joined by individuals Terra Bertsch in the high jump, Lily Mercer in the 400-meter, and Cera Strumpfer in the pole vault. Strumpfer is the top ranked vaulter in the state, with no other athletes jumping within seven inches of her this season.

The girls relay teams finished third and fourth but both were run without Bohlman. With her addition next week, both teams will be in the mix for trophies.

The girl's team will also be joined by sophomore Ashley Miller who hit an automatic qualifier in the triple jump earlier in the season.

On the boys' side, the Blackhawks came away with individual wins in the 800-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. The relay team of Logan Robinson, Hunter Shelmerdine, Keaton Johnson and Logan Maughan ran a two second personal record (PR), running 3:34.91, the fastest time in the state by more than two seconds.

"Those boys have been putting in two, three weeks of just incredible practice," said coach David Cahoon. "It's no surprise they do as well as their doing right now. They should win [state]."

Logan Robinson ran a huge PR in the 200-meter, finishing fifth to punch his first ticket to state. Shelmerdine, Maughan and Johnson also went 2-3-4 in the 400-meters, and Maughan finished second in the 1600 after getting tripped up and nearly falling early on.

Maughan and Mitch Parcell both ran season records in the 800-meter to finish first and second.

"I'm really proud of my 800 boys," said coach Zelda Haines. "I'm hoping we can continue on with the 800 boys [at state]. It's looking really strong for us."

The Class C state meet will be held May 26-27 in Laurel. The Lady Blackhawks will be in the hunt for the state trophy, while the boys will be looking to pick up a win in the 4x400 meter relay.
