GREAT FALLS - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks headed over the mountains to challenge athletes from more than two dozen Class A, B and C schools April 29. The Lady Blackhawks took third while the Boys took fourth.
Earlier in the week the Blackhawks’ top athletes participated in the Russ Pilcher Top 10 in Missoula. To make the cut, athletes had to rank in the top ten of all schools, across all classes, in western Montana.
Alex Bohlman, Cera Strumpfer and the Boys and Girls 4x400 relay teams rose to the challenge at the Top 10.
Bohlman placed first in the 200 and javelin and seventh in the 100. Her 200-meter time qualified her for state, making her the first Class C athlete to qualify in that event.
Strumpfer vaulted 9 feet to take home second place in the pole vault while both the Boys and Girls 4x400 relay teams each finished in fourth place.
At Great Falls, Bohlman furthered her school record from last year and earned first place, throwing the javelin 140 feet, 7 inches. She has taken first place at nine consecutive meets this season. Bohlman also ran a state qualifying time in the 400-meter, earning third place.
Terra Bertsch claimed first place in the high jump, with a 4 foot, 10 inch jump. Strumpfer brought home another first place in the pole vault, clearing 8 foot, 6 inches.
The Lady Blackhawks relay teams placed sixth in the 4x100 and fourth in the 4x400.
On the Boys’ side, the Blackhawks showed their team’s depth in the 400 meter. Five Blackhawks finished in the top 15 of 43 athletes. Hunter Shelmerdine and Logan Maughan placed second and fourth respectively. Keaton Johnson finished just outside the points in seventh.
The team’s depth in the 400 also showed in the 4x400 as the A team took first and the B team took third out of 20 teams. The boys’ 4x100 relay came in third.
In the triple jump, two Blackhawks set new personal records. Shelmerdine earned fifth with his new longest jump of 38feet 4.25 inches and Dakota Wood came in ninth, jumping 37 feet 4 inches.
The Blackhawks next meet is the Kim L. Haines Memorial at Frenchtown, May 6.
