Students Hold Poetry Slam to Honor National Poetry Month

SWAN VALLEY – Swan Valley Elementary School's (SVES) third through fifth grade class hosted a Poetry Slam April 28 in honor of National Poetry Month. Each student chose one or two poems to share with the rest of the SVES students and members of the community.

During the month of April the students wrote one poem per day. Teacher Erica Carroll said she had been to poetry slams in the past and thought it would be a fun way to showcase the students' work.

A poetry slam is a competition at which performance artists read or recite original work. While this was not a competition, each student recited either a poem they had written or one they liked. Those in attendance were asked to either snap or clap using two fingers and the back of their hand at the end of each selection "because it is more poetry-like."

Carroll thanked all the students for their hard work, the parents for their support helping their children practice at home and the community for attending the slam and showing their support.

Carroll wrote, "The students have worked so hard this last month on so many amazing, meaningful, comedic, beautiful poems. As well, they took on the challenge to memorize a poem for the class and they rocked it."
