MISSOULA - Seeley-Swan High School (SSHS) senior Gavin Mercado and junior Cameron Haines were recognized as two of Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) Most Inspiring Students at a banquet April 20. They were a part of a group that teachers and school staff recognized for excelling despite incredible odds.
The Most Inspiring Students Banquet has been held for the past six years. Award recipients were nominated because they serve as examples of perseverance, determination and as role models for fellow peers. These students achieve despite difficult circumstances and challenges including serious injuries, life threatening illnesses, severe disabilities, extreme poverty, loss of loved ones and other difficulties that could impede their education.
Every year SSHS teachers and staff choose two students who they feel are an inspiration to others.
Mercado was grateful and overjoyed to be chosen for the award. He has coached his younger brothers their entire life and said he has tried to change others and push them to be greater than they think they could be.
"I plan on going into coaching and teaching as a career so this award gives me great confidence as I embark into the future with plans to change the world, one person at a time," wrote Mercado in an email.
Haines was surprised that he was chosen for the award. He never thought of himself as someone who would receive the award but said he has always held himself to a high standard.
"It was really nice because it showed me that all the hard work I've put in is paying off," said Haines. "If you work hard and don't give up, someone will eventually notice."
Students from MCPS middle and high schools along with their families and a school representative attended the banquet Thursday, April 20 at the Double Tree in Missoula.
SSHS teacher and Athletic Director Shawn Holmes represented SSHS with Haines. Mercado was unable to attend because he was involved in the SSHS Drama Class play the same night. Both he and Haines received a medal, certificate of recognition and gift certificate for the honor.
Even though Haines said it was nerve wracking getting up in front of so many students, staff and parents from other schools, he thought, "It was awesome. It was a fun experience."
SSHS Principal Dr. Kathleen Pecora wrote, "[Gavin and Cameron] have shown growth beyond our expectations."
