MISSOULA - Missoula County 4-H presented 67 county awards to 47 4-H club members who showed excellence in their project areas. The nominated members were from eight 4-H clubs. This year popular projects included beef, club officer, dog, horse, rabbit and sheep as well as cake decorating, photography, archery and teen leadership.
Missoula County 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent Campbell Barrett said award numbers were up this year due to club leaders and others taking the time to nominate the 4-H members.
Barrett said last year there were 68 nominations for 52 members, 41 members interviewed and 53 county awards were presented to 38 members. This year there were 86 nominations for 62 members with 51 interviewed.
"I think club leaders are getting better about recognizing members more consistently for their achievements," said Barrett.
Potomac Valley 4-H Club had 12 members win awards for dog, horse, beef, citizenship, rabbit, teen leadership, club officer, archery and sheep.
After the fair and record book completion, members were notified if they had been nominated. Some had to make some refinements to their record books which were part of the judging.
Award interviews were held Oct. 18 in Missoula. Questions asked included knowledge of their project, what 4-H means to them, responsibility taken for project, providing interesting information as well as eye contact, posture, confidence, appropriate dress and speaking from personal experience. Tiebreaker questions were asked when interview scores were tied so top individual in each category can be scored accordingly. Questions included if the members provided leadership to younger members, performed community service and contributed to their 4-H clubs.
Barrett said the 4-H members do great every year. "There were some outstanding interviews and I got to know some really sharp up and coming leaders in the 4-H program," he said.
