Eagles Rise Above Trojans

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Elementary Eagles tipped off the boys basketball season at home against Drummond, Nov. 3. According to Head Coach Brett Haines, their goals have not changed from last year: Teamwork, work the offense, run the plays correctly, look for each other and play smart.

The team has three eighth-graders and three seventh-graders on the A team and 13 sixth-graders and three fifth-graders on the B team. Haines said he was happy to pick up seventh-grader Walker McDonald who is new to SLE this year. He now has six players on the A team instead of just five.

Haines said they are working on running their offense, executing the plays and sharing the ball. On defense, the boys are expected to hustle and go after the ball.

"I tell the guys on those loose balls it is the meanest, orneriest guy that comes out of the pile with the ball so it might as well be you," said Haines. "You have to be aggressive and get in there and get after it."

The Eagles and Trojans traded the lead in the B game, tying it up at the end 22-22. They went into overtime where Johnnie Stout and Owen Hoag were able to each add two points. Drummond was only able to score one bringing the final score 26-23 Eagles.

Points Scored B Game: Kaden Sunderland 6; Johnnie Stout 5; Owen Hoag 4; Kayden Thornsbury 3; Aaron Jungers 2; Klayton Kovatch 2; Sean Mercado 2 and Ari Nicholas 2.

In the A Game against Drummond, Haines said the team got off to a slow start with Drummond hitting three three-pointers in the first quarter. Seeley answered back pounding in the layups.

Haines said his assistant coach Tylen Dial mentioned Drummond had a mismatch on Beau Sloan. Point guard Owen Mercado was able to pass to Sloan several times who was open and made the layup.

"They just couldn't stop Beau in there with those bump and goes with him and Owen. That's what really got the ball rolling," said Haines. "We were able to build the lead up and then get my younger players some good varsity experience."

Sloan scored 19 points with Mercado and Walker McDonald each scoring 9 points in the first three quarters.

Haines started substituting in the sixth-graders in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter the Eagles were up 20 points, 44-24.

Haines put all of the sixth-graders in for the last six minutes of the game after they had already played the B game.

"The little guys came in and did awesome at the end of the game," said Haines. "They came in and handled some tough pressure on them. They got after it and only gave up two points." The final score was 47-30.

Haines was happy with how well the teams played against Drummond. He said, "We are looking forward to another great season and seeing how good we can get."
