SEELEY LAKE - The proposed sewer is not backed by everyone who will be charged for it. In fact, it would be good if some sort of survey was conducted to ascertain exactly how many participants are for it. We do not know this and in a democratic society this should be basic knowledge for everyone involved.
This whole program has been thrust upon property owners with no vote and very little information about the total costs we’ll have to pay.
I personally own two parcels. As I understand it, it could be levied a charge of $40,000 per parcel. Oh, and though two properties are owned and the committee says that the assessments will be charged according to land area and uses, I only get one vote though two properties are owned.
Another issue which has not been addressed is what this will actually accomplish. Those in favor of it generally want to expand their businesses with more restroom facilities. My take is that if all this money is to be spent to improve the economy and quality of life in Seeley Lake, it is being spent on the wrong side of Highway 83.
Our lake is a basic source of revenue coming into our community through tourism. There are educated people in this town who won’t even swim in the lake for fear of pollution. Our drinking water which comes from the lake has a fecal content above the governmental standards.
Why aren’t we trying to clean up the lake by bringing the septic systems around the lake up to specs? There are even cesspools and automobiles buried to contain the effluent. If we lose the tourism due to a polluted lake, the businesses backing this program may as well close their doors.
I will vote against this project and I suspect many others will as well.
