2VS Brings Fubuki Daiko to Seeley Lake

SEELEY LAKE - Blizzard Drums is the translation of Fubuki Daiko. Alpine Artisans' 2 Valleys Stage (2VS) is bringing the drumming group to Seeley-Swan High School (SSHS) Tuesday, Oct. 18. This exciting group of musician athletes will amaze both children and adults with their blend of martial arts, meditation and rhythm.

The core members of the group each have more than 25 years of taiko drumming experience and training from Tokyo-born Seiichi Tanaka. Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka of the San Francisco Taiko Dojo is considered the founder of North American modern taiko. The art of the dance and the drums, which are referred to as taiko, combine to make a fascinating tableau that will entrance music aficionados as well as high school football stars and everyone in between.

Fubuki Daiko moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and formed a touring group in 1994. The group performs almost exclusively original works that combine the performers' North American roots with their traditional training. The result is stunning. Combining the talent and musicality with humorous and educational stories between pieces helps establish an immediate connection with the audience. Their goal is to "demystify this ancient musical tradition."

The four musicians visiting Seeley Lake are Hiroshi Koshiyama, Naomi Guilbert, Bruce Robertson and Giselle Mak. All of them are instructors in their art and work with children and adults. In addition, Hiroshi is trained in the art of the Japanese Lion Dance.

Fubuki Daiko's CD of the same name received a Prairie Music Award for outstanding instrumental recording.

Their second CD, "Zanshin," received a Western Canadian Music Award Nomination for outstanding album graphic design. The group has shared the stage with Elvis Costello, Blue Rodeo and the Nylons.

For dancers, the choreography is intense. For percussionists, the drumming is complex. For the rest of us, it is pure, high-energy entertainment. Don't miss this show!

Though the remainder of the 2VS 2016-2017 season, performances will be on Sundays, high demand and their packed calendar necessitated scheduling Fubuki Daiko on a Tuesday.

Fubuki Daiko will be giving student informances at SSHS at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 9:30 a.m. for Potomac and Swan Valley Schools and 2 p.m. for Seeley Lake Elementary.

The public performance will be held in the SSHS Helen and C.B. Rich Gym Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the venue. Season tickets will be available Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Cory's Valley Market or online at http://www.AlpineArtisans.org.
