SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Ranger District will host a free half-day (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) National Public Lands Day event Saturday, Sept. 24 at Monture Guard Station. The event will include a tour of the historic Guard Station, demonstrations on the use of primitive tools, packing stock, identifying noxious weeds, analyzing soils, practicing leave no trace principles, operating a district fire engine and more! Bring your family and your lunch and the Forest Service will provide drinks, dessert and free t-shirts (while they last). Meet Smokey Bear and your local Forest Service personnel.
National Public Lands Day is the Nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands projects that ensure sustainable ecosystems and promote vibrant communities.
Across the country National Public Lands Day volunteers typically join thousands of others who take pride in assisting land managers by clearing and restoring trails and cleaning campgrounds and shorelines across the country – or just learning about their public lands and land management practices.
According to the Forest Service national office, National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three sites and 700 volunteers. It proved to be a huge success and became an annual event, typically held on the last Saturday in September. Since that first celebration, the event has continued to grow each year.
In 2014, 175,000 volunteers participated at more than 2,000 sites in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
On national forests, grasslands and prairies, nearly 110,000 volunteers and service members contributed 4.6 million hours on projects last year. Their service was valued at close to $105 million, according to the Forest Service’s national office.
