New Portal Signs Showcase Information

POTOMAC - The Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC) has installed signs within the Potomac block of land that belongs to the school land trust. The signs, located in Camas and Ashby Creek drainages as well as near the DNRC boundary at Forest Park and Cramer Creek, were installed in early May.

According to Missoula DNRC Unit Manager Jonathan Hansen who manages the Potomac area, "The portal signs were put up to better inform the public that the lands within the Potomac Block belong to the School Trust and to inform them of the rules governing their use."

Information on the signs is a larger copy of the rules governing the use of the Potomac Block Management Area which includes these trust lands said Hansen.

Also on the signs are recreational use rules and a map. The map shows the DNRC ownership within the Potomac Block which includes the lands the DNRC purchased from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the DNRC original ownership, according to Hansen.

The DNRC hopes to inform the public by posting the rules which are meant to be informative and explain recreational use of school trust lands.

The boundaries showing ownership have not changed since the finalization of the land purchase from TNC in 2011.

In addition to the portal signs there are new livestock and equestrian signs posted in those drainages. Those signs were mounted in response to some public concerns directed toward the DNRC regarding vehicle traffic and livestock conflicts. Some areas around Potomac qualify as open range and cattle and horses can be encountered along roadways.

"We're trying to minimize any potential hazards," said Hansen.
