VICTOR - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks headed to Victor to take on the Pirates Aug. 27 for the opening game of the football season.
The Pirates showed no mercy as they handed the Blackhawks a 6-58 loss.
The Blackhawks' lone touchdown came on a 60-yard pass to Hunter Sokoloski from Shane Lindemer.
"We weren't as bad as the score would indicate," said Blackhawk Head Coach Ryan Sokoloski.
Coach Sokoloski explained that most of the mistakes were fundamental type mistakes, missed tackles and blocks being the biggest issues.
Coach Sokoloski said the team had some issues playing together as a team. He said he was glad to have the issue come out early in the season so they could work through it.
"If we're going to win, we can't rely on individual play from any one athlete," said Coach Sokoloski.
This is Coach Sokoloski's first year as head coach of the Blackhawks though he has been an assistant coach for three years. The biggest change he said he's making is getting back to the basics, focusing on the fundamentals of the game rather than getting caught up in complex plays.
"Just hard work wins games," said Coach Sokoloski. "There is no one single play that will cause us to win. There is no one single play that will cause us to lose."
Junior Varsity
The Blackhawks Junior Varsity team got to work on the home field taking on the Pirates JV team Aug. 29.
The JV Blackhawks wasted no time putting points on the board. Blackhawk Avery Smith snuck through the Pirates defensive line for the first points. Smith would find his way into the end zone a couple more times before the game was over.
Blackhawk Gunner Sloan took the ball right up the middle, dragging defenders along for the ride, to score the final points of the game. Final score was 28-0 giving the JV their first win of the season.
The Blackhawks next game is at home against Darby, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The JV will travel to Darby, Sept. 6 for a 4 p.m. game.
