One of my favorite slogans is, “Ask a teenager now…while they still know everything.” We’ve all been on both sides of this. It is common for youth to feel certain that they possess a firm understanding of life. Yet, with age, comes a humble understanding that is shaped by wisdom and life experience.
In my articles I have been taking a look at attributes of God, the many different terms that describe how wonderful God is. The attributes of God describe for us the beauty and truth of God that directs our worship. We know from scripture that God is all-knowing, another term is omniscient.
What this means is that God knows everything, there is nothing hidden from God and that His knowledge is infinite. It can be said that God has no need to learn…all is known to Him.
In our daily lives, with all attributes, that God is all-knowing gives us much to rest in. We see the benefit of God’s infinite knowledge in Psalm 139, “O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” Psalm 139:1-5 (NLT)
In my limited teenage years, I thought I had life figured out. The years change that for all of us. But the wonderful truth that we can stand upon is that God is all-knowing. It is the Lord who knows our hearts, our thoughts, our future and our intentions. God even knows what we are going to say before we speak. All of this is for the purpose that God’s blessing would be on our lives.
One of our deepest longings is to understand, especially to make sense of tragic and difficult circumstances in our lives. The barrier that we come up against is that there is much we may never understand. However, our lives rest in our Lord who knows and understands everything. God does have it all figured out. We know that we can always look to the Lord, because He does know everything.
