Swan Lake Huckleberry Festival Celebrates 35 Years

SWAN LAKE - In 1981, members of the Swan Lake community decided that they needed some kind of summer festival. They wanted to raise funds for community projects but they were also looking for a way to give the public a day of fun and relaxation on the shore of their beautiful lake. According to newspaper accounts, the first festival drew an estimated 400 people to the Swan Lake Day Park for a chuck wagon barbecue, children's activities, a baking contest and arts and crafts. Those press reports stated that the organizers vowed that this first festival "won't be the last". They were true to their word.

Members of the Swan Lake Chamber and Community Club are gearing up for the 35th Annual Swan Lake Huckleberry Festival which will get underway at the Swan Lake Day Park on Saturday, Aug. 13. The original huckleberry festival has grown, but organizers have taken care to ensure that the atmosphere is still that of a true community celebration and a great day at Swan Lake.

The pancake breakfast begins at 8 a.m., before the official opening of the event at 9 a.m. Other morning activities include the Huckleberry Baking contest that will expand this year to include a children's division for youngsters 10 and under. For both divisions, the rules are the same. All entries must be huckleberry based with a minimum of three servings provided. Entries will be accepted starting at 10:30 a.m. with judging at 11 a.m.

The Arts and Crafts Fair will open at 9 a.m., featuring 50 vendors offering a wide array of handicrafts, gifts, Montana-made products, food and country-made delicacies. At 11:30 a.m., the music begins as the popular Ashley Creek Ramblers featuring Roy Wilhelm begin to play. The music will continue until 3:30 p.m.

Planned afternoon activities include kids' activities and games, a silent auction, grand prize drawing for an iPad, split-the-pot and raffles of donated items including gift certificates and products from area restaurants and merchants.

The Festival is sponsored by the Swan Lake Chamber of Commerce and Community Club. Festival proceeds will be used to fund maintenance of the Swan Lake Community Center.
