Lois' Salon in Potomac

Business of the Week

Series: Business of the Week | Story 30

Goal: Lois' Salon owner Lois Grant of Potomac hopes to have all her customers leave with a smile on their faces. Grant enjoys helping people look their best and seeing them leave happy with the results.

History: Originally Grant wanted to go to business college but after receiving a cosmetology scholarship she fell in love with the idea of having a salon. Grant then completed 1,600 hours in a qualified beauty school and passed state board exams for California and Montana to become a licensed cosmetologist.

"I got into the salon business by 'shear' determination," Grant said.

Grant opened her first business in Weaverville, Calif. in 1964. "Once I started working, and opened my own salon, I never considered another career," Grant said.

Grant and her husband Harry have lived in Potomac for the last 12 years. Grant opened her current salon shortly after they completed construction on their house and she realized she was not ready to retire. The salon is in Grant's home in Potomac and is unique because it is off the beaten path.

"You have to travel nearly three miles on a gravel road to get here. We are nestled back in the trees," Grant said.

Grant likes to set her own schedule and is the sole owner/operator for the salon.

Grant uses a variety of specialized equipment in her salon including different styles of scissors, razors, and clippers for each haircut.  "Each haircut is unique and requires special attention," said Grant. She also uses blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons. "The list goes on and on," Grant said.

Products & Services: Grant carries Redken products and offers services for men, women, teens and children. Services include hairstyles, highlighting, color, perms, facial waxing and ear piercing.
