Special Areas Opened for Personal Firewood Cutting

KALISPELL – The Flathead National Forest will open roads in two administrative use areas for personal use firewood collection from July 15 –Aug. 14.  This will allow temporary access for woodcutting on some roads that are normally closed to public motorized traffic.  The two areas include:

• Rogers Lake Firewood on Swan Lake Ranger District – Gated Roads 2986 and 2983 in Sections 28,32,33 T27N R23W and Sec 4 T26N R23W.  These roads provide access to both non-saw decked material as well as dead/standing trees.  These road systems will open at 7 a.m., July 15 and close Aug. 15.

 • Tepee Creek Firewood on Glacier View Ranger District– Road 5399 in Secs 11, 14 T36N R22W.  This road is bermed at the junction of Whale Creek Road 318.  This road will open at 12 p.m., July 15 and close Aug. 15.

A U.S. Forest Service (USFS) personal-use firewood permit is available for a minimum of four cords of firewood for $20.  Woodcutters must have their permit with them while collecting wood and fill it out as required.  Cutters are required to follow all terms and conditions written on the permit.

The area will be monitored by USFS personnel, as in previous years.  Resource damage, such as creating “stump roads” or the loss of marked wildlife trees, could result in discontinuing the opportunity to cut firewood on yearlong closed roads.  Public cooperation has been excellent in past years and firewood cutters using the area are asked to help continue to make this opportunity a success.

To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable woodcutting experience, people visiting the area are asked to spread out, keep a lookout for other people and vehicles, and as much as possible keep the road open and passable for others.  Some of the roads have limited space where they end, so it is a good idea to turn vehicles around before filling it with wood.

Maps of the woodcutting areas, as well as firewood permit are available at the local ranger station in the woodcutting area or Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Kalispell.

Fire Danger MODERATE in Missoula County - Outdoor Permit Burning Remains CLOSED

MISSOULA – Wildland fire officials with the Missoula County Fire Protection Association (MCFPA) have dropped fire danger within Missoula County to MODERATE, a downgrade from HIGH.

Recent days have seen lower temperatures, higher relative humidity and widespread precipitation. Debris burning shall remain CLOSED and MCFPA urges the public to still be cautious when dealing with any ignition sources.

Produce one less spark by making sure a campfire is cold to the touch before leaving it at any time of day or night. Drown it with water and stir it to expose residual heat.  Have water and hand tools available on-site when having a campfire.  Make sure trailer safety chains aren’t dragging on pavement before travelling and check when stopped.

And, if operating anything with an internal combustion engine, ask, “Could a spark from this machine find its way into cured grass?”

“Like” the MCFPA on Facebook and get information on their webpage http://www.mcfpa.org for more local fire information.
