Seeley Lake Library News

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Library’s Story Time has moved to a new time and takes place on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Children of all ages are welcome. A light snack is served.

The library has life jackets in a variety of sizes available for checkout. For more information, call 406-677-8995.

The Seeley Lake Library is a branch of Missoula Public Library located at Seeley-Swan High School. The library is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Missoula to Host ‘Plan to Hunt’ Adult Education Series

MISSOULA - Missoula will host a “Plan to Hunt” workshop series from June through October for adults that are new to hunting or just want to expand their skills and understanding in order to hunt more confidently in Montana.

These free workshops offer hands-on training and access to local experts and mentor hunter instructors. Attend all or just one and no pre-registration is required.

Workshops are hosted and instructed by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Garden City Harvest, The Trail Head and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The complete schedule includes:

• The hunting experience you want:

June 28, 6 p.m. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (5706 Grant Creek Rd).

Discover how to decode the hunting regulations and what permits, licenses, gear, mapping and other tools are available to help plan and prepare for the hunt.

• Getting into the game: 

July 12, 6 p.m., Pattee Canyon Picnic Area. Experienced hunters will share how to map, scout, track and better understand the behavior and movement patterns of game.

• Packed and sighted-in:

Aug. 2, 6 p.m., Deer Creek Shooting Center (E. Missoula, off Deer Creek Rd).

See what gear is in the pack of Montana’s hunters and the firearms and archery equipment needed for each animal. Shoot at the range under the direction of experienced hunters.

• From field to freezer: Aug. 23, 6 p.m., MT Fish, Wildlife & Parks (3201 Spurgin Rd).

Learn the steps—from field dressing, to transport, to wild game processing, that help move an animal from the field to freezer. This workshop includes hands-on field dressing and other demos.

• Locally grown and served: Sept. 13, 6 p.m., PEAS Farm (3010 Duncan Dr). Local hunters and Missoula farmers will demonstrate how to take a harvest and turn it into easy, healthy and creative wild harvest meals. Enjoy a meal during the presentation.

• Pre-season questions: Oct. 4, 6 p.m., The Trail Head (221 E. Front St). Open-session Q&A with local experts to ensure readiness for opening day.

• Celebrate the hunt: Dec. 6, 6 p.m., The Loft (119 W. Main). A post-season potluck filled with locally harvested and gathered ingredients. Share stories, talk about what was learned and plan for the 2017 season, all while enjoying food and refreshments.

Students can also opt to receive additional training and access to local expertise by enrolling in a more intensive field training and mentorship program. This option is also free, but space is limited. To enroll, email vcrowser@mt.gov or call 406-542-5518.

Summer Activities Offered by SLE 21st Century Community Learning Center

SEELEY LAKE – Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) 21st Century Community Learning Center offers a wide variety of summer enrichment activities.

• Summer Adventure Club: Meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. from June 13 – Aug. 17. Mountain Biking Mondays (ages 8-14) learn about geocaching, bike maintenance and much more. Bring bike, helmet, water and sense of adventure. Water Sport Tuesdays (ages 10-14) explores local lakes and the watershed. Wild Hike Wednesdays (ages 8-14) are reserved for hiking, exploring and learning the natural history of the Seeley-Swan Valley.

• Swimming Lessons: Offered July 11-13 at Holland Lake Beach and July 18-20 at River Point Campground. Lessons are 25 minutes each between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is in place of Adventure Club.

• Summer Art Camp: Painting with Sharon Lamar or Nature Walk and Art with Sara Halm. June 28-July 1 for all ages. Contact Susan Bracha with questions, 754-2320 or 370-6093.

• Wilderness Backpacking: Students will experience wilderness adventure while learning backpacking skills, natural history, wilderness safety, team building, wilderness travel, cooking, orienteering, survival skills and more. July 27-29 for ages 10-14. Limited to 8 students.

• SLE Flag Football Camp Offered by Coach Brett Haines the camp will be for students in fifth-eighth grade. Aug. 22-26 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
