Moving On Up to the First Grade

SEELEY LAKE - Thirteen Seeley Lake Elementary kindergarteners participated in their completion ceremony June 9. Friends, family and members of the community got to see and hear about what they learned throughout the year.

Teacher Sheila Devins said that the group is a musical group and she used a lot of music with them. They also did a lot of activities as a part of the International Baccalaureate Program.

"We had a lot of fun this year and these students were active, engaged learners," said Devins.

One example Devins shared was their study about the civil rights movement in America and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They made a school bus and drove it around to all the classrooms telling the other students about the movement and Dr. King. They also learned the song "Shed a Little Light" by James Taylor and sang it over the loud speaker for the school.

Those in attendance were also introduced to Copper, the dog puppet. Copper would send messages to the students during the year and they would read them. Copper sent a message that the students read to their parents. It congratulated the students and said he would miss them.

"They have been an amazing bunch and it has been a privilege to teach them," said Devins.
