SEELEY LAKE - An overview of the U.S. Forest Service’s trail maintenance plan for the area will kick off the next Seeley Lake Community Council (SLCC) meeting. Rachel Feigley, Seeley Lake District Ranger, will talk about how competing demands for firefighting and shrinking budgets will affect trail maintenance.
Next on the agenda is the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Project (BCSP), a decade-long effort that involves timber, recreation and conservation in a landscape-sized proposal and which enjoys the support of loggers, hunters, ranchers, outfitters and conservationists. In order for it to become reality it requires an act of Congress. The supporters of BCSP are trying to demonstrate public support to the Montana congressional delegation and they are asking the Community Council for its endorsement of the project.
There will be an update on the Council’s Traffic Project, a multi-year effort that proposes lower speed limits in Seeley Lake and more and better-marked pedestrian crossings. Missoula County and Montana Department of Transportation have started to work on the crossings issue locally by marking up two additional crosswalks on a trial basis. The Council’s speed limit proposal, modified to be implemented on a seasonal basis, was submitted to the Transportation Commission in Helena in May. The Commission voted to table the issue until their July meeting.
Like every June, the council will reorganized and elect its officers. Jack Greenwood and Klaus von Stutterheim were re-elected to the Council. The County Commissioners reappointed Duane “Cecil” Schlabach, who holds the appointed position. None of the three faced opposition. Terms run for three years.
Like always, there will be an opportunity for public comments on non-agenda items.
The informal part of the meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. next Monday, June 13, at the Seeley Lake Historical Museum and Visitors Center, with pizza and sodas.
