70th Annual 4-H Drama Festival Held in Potomac

POTOMAC - More than 60 years ago Missoulian and 4-H supporter Tony Rollin created the first "Drama Festival" where Missoula County 4-H clubs produced plays and skits using 4-H members as the talent.

Potomac Valley, Blue Mountain, Lolo Peak, Bearcreek Buckaroos and the Mullen Trail Mustangs 4-H Clubs brought acting competition to the Potomac/Greenough Community Center (PGCC) Sunday May 15. Festival judges Hannah Fradkin and Amy Kalil are volunteers from the Missoula Children's Theatre.

Potomac Valley 4-H Club collaborated with the Blue Mountain 4-H Club to bring classic comedy to the stage directed by Potomac Valley's Lynn Sainsbury. Corbin Weltzein, Marie Sainsbury, Lauren Nordberg, Ben Carter, Brynn Nordberg, Max Carter and Freya Jones, all 4-H members, presented skits from "I Love Lucy", Monty Python, Abbott and Costello and Carol Burnett as well as the opening and closing scenes for the festival.

Next came "Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate," a play by D.M. Larson directed by 4-H member Amber Voss for her senior project. The cast included actors and actresses from Lolo Peak, Bearcreek Buckaroos and Mullen Trail Mustangs 4-H Clubs.

For third year 4-H member Kaysen Hirsch the play was a good time. Hirsch played the part of "Mama Sea Monster."

"[For my character] I am a nice mama sea monster but when it comes down to it I can be serious," said Hirsch. Hirsch also said she likes being part of 4-H where she can do projects she never thought she could do. "I have a Pocket Pets project with a rat named Nebwo," said Hirsch.

The last play of the afternoon was presented by the Mullen Trail Mustangs 4-H Club. It was called "Snow White and the 9 Kachus" by D.M. Larson and revised by Kristine Zimmerman. In the play, Snow White was famous for her cupcakes which gave the queen tummy aches. The nine kachus (birds) made nests and sang and danced throughout their presentation as the drama unfolded.

More than 80 people attended the annual festival where the traditional pie auction earned $587 towards future drama festivals. Out of 21 donated pies, the top pie was a grasshopper pie made by Potomac resident Jodi Wills and was purchased for $65 by the Wildeboer family.

Missoula County Extension Agent Campbell Barrett said he is pleased with the plays and the support for the pie auction. "I like to see the clubs' creative use of downtime between set changes and during breaks." Through the years and today the participating 4-H clubs have thrown candy, told jokes, played magic tricks and danced to music to keep their audience captivated.
