Facing Adversity

You are a very rare person, indeed, if you have never faced a difficult time in your life such as death of a loved one, divorce, loss of home, unemployment…etc. I could list many possible events in your life that would give you extreme sorrow in some way or another. Just look at the tragedies that are in the newspaper every day that kill or severely injure thousands of people.

I can’t remember how many times people have asked the question “Why would a loving God allow that to happen” after a major loss of life has occurred. After all, isn’t God in charge and can’t He make anything happen or not happen?

In response to this question most people forget that God gives us free will on how to conduct our lives. God is not the master puppeteer that activates our strings to prevent hardship or death. God allows us to do what we want to do.

He created the world and everything in it with certain physical laws that He does not change. If you break those laws you suffer the consequences. If you choose to drive a car at 60 miles per hour into a brick wall you will die or at least be severely injured. That is your choice.

Did God cause it to happen? NO.

Did God allow it to happen? YES.

Did God know in advance that you were going to injure yourself? YES.

Was the event part of God’s plan for your life? I don’t think so.

Yet God does intervene in the lives of people He chooses for a specific purpose. The Bible is full of examples.

Romans 9:21 states, “Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?” makes it very clear. God is sovereign; His purposes are without fault and are totally pure.

The sin and evil that mankind perpetuates upon the world is the cause of adversity. Jesus commanded us to “Love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and soul and to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

If we follow that commandment the world will truly be a much more peaceful place.
