MISSOULA – The West Central Montana Avalanche Center posted their last regularly scheduled avalanche advisory for the season Saturday, April 2. Additional updates may be posted if conditions warrant.
Snowmobile trail grooming on the Missoula Ranger District on the Lolo National Forest and the Powell District on the Nez Perce- Clearwater National Forest has ended for the season. Roads that were closed to wheeled traffic during the grooming season may again be open in some locations.
Recreation specialists are also advising snowmobilers to stay alert for all trail hazards, including closed gates, wheeled vehicles and poor trail conditions due to melting snow. Snowmobile trail signage may not be present as the clubs will begin to remove signs as conditions allow.
In some cases melting snow may produce soft, muddy roadbeds. While these conditions exist, roads may be closed temporarily to prevent damage and reduce road maintenance costs.
Visitors should also review Forest Travel Plan maps for open road status and snowmobile area restrictions or call their local Ranger District for specific information. On the Seeley Lake Ranger District, grizzly bear restrictions went into effect on April 1. For information on those travel restrictions please refer to the Seeley Lake Visitors’ Map/Travel Plan or contact the District office at the number listed: Missoula Ranger District, 406-329-3814; Superior Ranger District, 406-822-4233; Seeley Lake Ranger District, 406-677-2233; Powell Ranger District, 208-942-3113.
Regarding avalanche advisories, avalanche specialists are encouraging backcountry users to remain vigilant and aware that avalanche potential still exists in some locations, especially higher elevation areas.
At the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, winter recreation passes are no longer required and dogs on leashes will be allowed on winter trails beginning April 17.
