Dan Johnson - Lieutenant 705

Meet the SLRFD Officers

Dan Johnson joined the Seeley Lake Rural Fire Department (SLRFD) as a volunteer firefighter four years ago. He had no prior experience.

In September 2011, Johnson said he showed up at a house fire behind Rovero's. "I saw that we really needed help in the department. They were really short handed," said Johnson. "That fire was when Shelly [Johnson's wife] and I decided to join."

Johnson is qualified as a structure firefighter. Seeley Lake Fire Chief Bob Vanden Heuvel promoted him to lieutenant six months ago. As lieutenant, Johnson helps maintain the command structure during an incident. He serves as a leader below the captains supervising and training other volunteer firefighters.

As an officer, Johnson enjoys the opportunity to be more involved with the new people. He said it's a challenge because he's not a real people person and it forces him to work directly with other volunteers.

"I really have to pay attention," said Johnson. "I haven't been doing it long enough so it all comes natural. I really have to think, pay attention and stay focused. I enjoy it, it's just taking a while to get used to it."

Johnson agrees with Captains Cory Calnan and Shawn Ellinghouse that the biggest challenge facing the SLRFD is having enough people to respond to medical and fire calls. "We need volunteers!"

Captain Cory Calnan said that Johnson is a great example of someone who brings other skills to the department.

"He owns a parts store and has mechanical abilities," said Calnan. "I don't know how many times he's helped us out with fixing a light and turning a wrench. That's a big savings for the department."

"I like the brotherhood and the camaraderie," said Johnson. "It's like a big happy family. I like being involved in the community and helping out."
