Since the formation of this great nation, it has welcomed all to participate in the fruits of the most successful capitalistic nation the world has ever known. There are immigrants here from virtually every part of the earth. The people of the Middle East Nations must not be precluded from availing themselves to the wonderful benefits of becoming members of this nation any more than your or my ancestors were. Part of residing in any country around the world as a guest, resident or citizen is to agree to learn and abide by that country’s laws.
People coming here legally because of disenchantment with their current status and are willing to adapt to the ‘American way’ with regard to our laws, should be welcomed. If, however, they like their old ways so much that they cannot change, then perhaps they would be happier not coming here to begin with.
We, as a nation, must understand that many of the immigrants coming from the Middle East have deep-seated beliefs that are not compatible with those of the United States. Honor killings of daughters because of family embarrassment, believing women are possessions of fathers or husbands rather than independent members of society are only two of many strongly held beliefs that are incompatible with our society.
In Irving, Texas an Egyptian immigrant killed his two daughters for having non-Muslim boyfriends!
An Iraqi immigrant in Phoenix killed his daughter for being too westernized.
A St. Louis, Missouri Palestinian father killed his daughter with a knife while her mother held her down because she had become too Westernized.
I don’t know if Missoula is ready for that type of thinking but those and many other beliefs are part of the Middle East culture. Will they Change?
