Bingo Focuses on Potomac School Needs

POTOMAC - The 13th Annual Bingo Night and fundraiser kicks off March 12 starting at 6 p.m. at the Potomac/Greenough Community Center (PGCC). This year monies raised will go towards bringing the PGCC kitchen up to code, bringing fine arts programs to Potomac School for the 2016/17 school year and creating a long jump pit at the Potomac School track.

The Potomac Parent/Teacher Club (PTC), a non-profit, school-focused organization comprised of a core group of teachers, parents and community members, host bingo night. Bingo is an opportunity for the surrounding community to support and contribute to Potomac School, said the PTC group.

"It is a fun event that supports a good cause," said PTC Treasurer Dannielle Spethman.

More than a dozen people work together to present the fundraiser including Potomac School teachers who will be offering concessions. There will be 12 rounds of Bingo with prizes awarded and raffles throughout the evening.

Each year prizes are collected from area businesses and Potomac School classes and staff.

Big Sky Antler Works designs, Potomac-raised ground beef, the Outdoor Basket and the Chocolate Lover's Basket are just some of the prizes.

Spethman said the money raised is used in different ways to impact the school directly because throughout the school year PTC funds many school events.

"PTC is making an investment in the school and the community at large with this event," said PTC Vice President Allyson Nelson.

The Potomac/Greenough Community Center (PGCC) is not owned by the school but utilized by the school on a daily basis. Potomac School students use the PGCC as their cafeteria as well as volleyball and basketball games, gym classes and seventh/eighth grade classrooms.

PTC wants the current hot lunch program to continue. Contributing some funds from Bingo will help fund the kitchen updates.

The PGCC kitchen is also used by various groups within Potomac. The Potomac Valley 4-H Club, the Greenough/Potomac Volunteer Fire Department (GPVFD), the Quilt Guild, Blackfoot Home and Community Club and the PGCC are some that utilize the kitchen for events. The PGCC is also a Red Cross Shelter.

The current eighth grade class also benefits from Bingo night. Eighth grade students volunteer to work during Bingo and receive a donation from PTC.

"The biggest joy is in seeing the opportunities afforded students because of Bingo," Nelson said. The money raised will serve to broaden and enrich their educational experience, she said.
