Swan Valley Warhawks Drop Two at Tournament

SWAN VALLEY - The Swan Valley Warhawks travelled to Drummond for the season ending Blackfoot Valley League tournament Saturday, Feb. 13 with high expectations as the defending League champions but fell short in both games.

Seated against the number one ranked team, Avon, the Warhawks failed to get off to a good start and played catch up for all the game before losing 40 to 27. Missed shots and turnovers hurt the local team against a strong, seasoned team that was undefeated for the season.

Kinley Moore and Seth Richardson led the Warhawks in scoring with 6 each followed by Aspen Conley with 5, Jayla Kauffman with 3 and Addie Anderson and Connor Matthew scoring 2 each.

Moving across brackets, the Warhawks had to play Helmville, a team for which that they had one loss and one win for the season. Missed shots and a shortage of rebounds put the Warhawks at a disadvantage the second half of the game after an 18 to 18 tie at halftime.

A low scoring third quarter put them behind by 4 going into the last quarter, eventually falling short by a score of 33 to 28.

The coaches were pleased with the efforts individually, but as a team they lacked consistency and made fundamental mistakes.

Aspen Conley led the Warhawks in scoring with 9 points with Rose Mercer netting 8, followed by Addie Anderson and Seth Richardson each with 4 points and Kinley Moore contributing 3.

The Warhawks are well represented on the All Star Team with Aspen Conley, Jayla Kauffman and Addie Anderson representing the Swan Valley at the All Star game in Drummond on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m.

The coaches would like to thank all the players, fans and parents for their support during this rebuilding year. Everyone on the two teams made significant improvement over the season and will be a force to be dealt with next year.

"We are losing our two eighth graders, Addie Anderson and Jayla Kauffman, but have a good crop of players ready to fill in next year," commented the coaches Katie Gleason, Ken Donovan and John Tapp. "We hope the kids do a lot of off season work on the fundamentals of the game as the league will be very strong next year."
