SWAN VALLEY - It could be said that the Swan Valley Warhawks “B” squad and the Helmville “B” squad are pretty close when it comes to winning basketball. For the second time this year the teams tied 14 to 14 and by league rules there is no overtime to end the game. A late 6-point fourth quarter brought the Warhawks within one point of a win.
“We started slow, only scoring 2 points in the first quarter but picked up 6 more in the second ” said Coach Katie Gleason. “It was an exciting game right to the end as both teams struggled to get the go ahead basket.”
The Warhawks were led in scoring by Kyla Conley and Kase Anderson both scoring 4 points each, followed up by Connor Matthews, Christopher Auchenbach and Mara Beckstrom each scoring 2.
The Warhawk “A” squad that won at home against Helmville team had a tough time shutting down the hot hand of Shelby Shuna at the away game. They gave up 12 points in the first quarter and a total of 18 for the night. Helmville took the win, 38 to 19.
“We were missing shots that typically go in and the zone defense of Helmville presented some problems with the Warhawks passing and rebounding”, commented coaches Ken Donovan and John Tapp. “It was a tough loss for us but will provide an incentive to step up our game for the tournament on Feb. 13 in Drummond.”
The coaches remain optimistic about the tournament as the young Warhawks, with only two eighth graders on the team, hope to see some of the younger players step up and play well. The Warhawks were led in scoring by Kinley Moore with 6 points, Aspen Conley added 4 while Seth Richardson scored 3, Rose Mercer 2, and Addie Anderson and Jayla Kauffman each scored 1.
