Warhawks Win One, Lose One

SWAN VALLEY - The Swan Valley Warhawks traveled to Avon to take on the Avon Elks Saturday, Jan. 16. The B squad came away with a nice win. The A squad was much improved and in all areas of the game but came up short of a win, 30 to 24.

The B squad exhibited much-improved ball handling and shooting with their defense standing strong limiting the hometown Elks to a 2 point first quarter and a 11 point game total.

Kyla Conley led the team with 8 points, followed by a 4-point game for Christopher Auckenbach and Connor Matthew. Kase Anderson finished with 2 points and third grader, Aubrey Matthew scoring her first points as a Warhawk.

Coach Katie Gleason was pleased with the overall team effort and hustle from all players. Final score was 20 to 11 in favor of the Warhawks.

The Warhawks A squad faced Avon’s Jada Clarkson, arguably one of the finest fifth graders in the state, who scored 16 of their total points and played exceptional defense. Rose Mercer led the Warhawks in scoring with 10 points, followed by Addy Anderson’s 6 points. Kinley Moore gathered 4 points while Aspen Conley and Seth Richardson scored 2 each. Conley and Richardson were tasked with guarding Avon’s star player and did a very good job disrupting her game.

Coaches Katie Gleason, Ken Donovan and John Tapp, despite losing by 6 points, saw a lot of improvement by everyone on the team.

“We were within 2 points with two minutes to go and just missed some shots that generally fall. We gained a lot of confidence just due to better execution of the game plan,” said Donovan.

“Avon, at this time, looks like the team to beat in the league and we feel that by tournament time, we can come out with a win,” agreed the coaches. “Our kids played a very aggressive game and had lots of opportunity to move ahead but a few key turnovers and missed shots didn’t bring home a victory.”

The Warhawks have two home games this week, one with Helmville on Friday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m., and a rematch with Avon Saturday morning, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. in the Swan Valley School gym.
