I have fond memories of singing in a choir during a Christmas program when I was in the fourth grade in a small east Texas town. In order to be in the choir, you had to learn all the words to most Christmas carols. No one complained that we sang about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ nor were there complaints that a large Christian cross was hung on the auditorium stage.
Things were different then and even though WW II was in progress we were looking forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior. I believe we knew what Christmas was all about.
Not true today in many places in the US. On recent TV there was a man asking college students why we celebrate Christmas. They didn’t have a clue. No one mentioned the birth of Christ. Most responses centered on gift giving, family dinners and having time off from work. While all of the answers have some validity the real reason is the birth of Christ.
That is what Christmas means…Christ worship. Schools are being prohibited from truly educating the students about Christmas. A recent example in a northern state school was when the school planned a living Nativity. When the threat of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom From Religion Foundation was made known the entire program was cancelled. What a shame that Christians are submitting to the desires of a few people and organizations.
Parents, make a difference this year by reading Luke 2: 1-20 to your children so they know why we celebrate Christmas. Explain to them that gift giving is done to remember the gifts given by the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. And be sure to thank God for blessings that He bestows on us freely.
