Seeley Lake Antler Crafts

Business of the Week

Series: Business of the Week | Story 12

Goal: Seeley Lake Antler Crafts owner Wade Rathbun's goal is to offer a unique craft for others to enjoy and use in their homes. He uses the freshest antler sheds possible offering a high quality product where the antler component has not been altered.

History: Rathbun started creating antler art with his ex-wife's grandfather and father between 1995-1996. Together they attended large craft shows in California offering antler-handled fire starters. "It's interesting and fun to work with antlers," said Rathbun.

After moving to Seeley Lake, Rathbun started Seeley Lake Antler Crafts. He and his wife Freda Grimes attended their first show together in 2009 at the Seeley Lake Senior Center Christmas Bazaar.

Rathbun expanded from fire starters including several other antler-based products. He enjoys offering new items and getting new ideas at the craft shows he attends in the area. "I enjoy travelling around and meeting people," said Rathbun. "I get to see a variety of crafts. The ideas just come to me. If I see something somewhere, I try it and see what I can do."

Rathbun is the sole employee, soliciting help from Grimes and his children when preparing for a large show. He works out of his "antler shed" at his home.

Products & Services: Seeley Lake Antler Crafts' bestselling product is the antler-handled fire starters. "The fire starters work so well they sell themselves," said Rathbun. Seeley Lake Antler Crafts also offers picture frames, wine glasses, fireplace sets, silverware sets, cribbage boards, belt buckles, bolo ties, key chains, Votive candle holders and business card holders. "We offer about anything but knives and lamps," said Rathbun.
