The Filling Station

Series: Business of the Week | Story 4

Goal: Owner Kris Martin's main goal for The Filling Station is to make money. "If I make money, my employees make money and they can afford to live here," said Martin. "I can't offer anything to this town unless I'm making money." Martin also strives to serve something for everyone in the family, from children to the adults. "I can't change much because I let the community guide me," said Martin. "We stick with the family favorites."

History: Eddie and Jerrie Coyle started The Filling Station 68 years ago in its current location. It was named Coyle's Bar. It wasn't until Don Larson purchased it around 35 years ago when the name changed to The Filling Station.

Martin purchased the restaurant Sept. 8, 1997. She has learned to love the gas station motif and never tried to change the name.

The Filling Station underwent a major remodel in 2009-2010. The restaurant was completely redone, ten feet was added to the building giving the casino a separate area and the bathrooms were redone. Martin couldn't believe she was offered the building permit being so close to the lake but was grateful when she received it. "After all that work people would say, 'Wow, you finally have proper bathrooms,'" said Martin shaking her head and smiling. "In the end, I was finally able to make the building the way I wanted it."

Products & Services: The Filling Station offers a full restaurant for family dining and full bar with a pool table and complimentary popcorn. The bar hosts karaoke every Friday and Saturday night.

The restaurant specialties include: huckleberry barbeque ribs, prime rib on Saturday nights and prime rib sandwiches. They also offer pizzas and daily lunch and dinner specials. They are open for breakfast Saturdays and Sundays offering breakfast specials on the weekends.

"When I'm asked what's good, I respond, it better be everything or I'm not doing my job," said Martin.

For the gamblers, Martin has 16 keno, poker and reel machines in the casino. "If someone likes to gamble, we have comfy chairs and it's a nice place. It's what it should be to have fun and enjoy a cocktail."
