Speed sign adds safety to Huckleberry Festival

Swan Lake Chamber and Community Club Event

SWAN LAKE - Visitors to the annual Huckleberry Festival put on by the Swan Lake Chamber and Community Club (SLC&CC) held in Swan Lake, Mont. on Aug. 8 had an added degree of safety this year due to the permanent solar speed reminder sign added late this spring. It reminds drivers of their speed and the speed limit as they approach the town of Swan Lake. It is located at the crest of a blind curving hill on Highway 83 near the Stage Stop store.

"There have been many close calls and near collisions [during the festival] on the crosswalk and intersection near the day use area," said festival co-chair Lesly Olsen. "We hope that this will slow drivers [before they enter the town]."

The SLC&CC applied for and received funding from the Flathead Electric Cooperative's Round Up for Safety program to pay for the speed sign according to SLC&CC president Diane Kautzman. She said they hope to work for another sign for the south end of town. "We want to purchase a temporary mobile speed reminder sign that can be placed in logical locations when necessary," said Kautzman.

This year during the Huckleberry Festival, the Lake County DUI task force placed a speed reminder sign in the parking lot of the Search and Rescue building located near the south side of the entrance to the Swan Lake day use area and site of the festival to remind northbound drivers of their speed. The DUI Task Force supplies signs for places around the area that have a need for traffic control in dangerous areas and in the case of the Huckleberry Festival, traffic and pedestrian congestion.

The day use area on Swan Lake was the site of many vendor and information booths, live music, raffles, children's games and the traditional Huckleberry baking contest during the Huckleberry Festival.
