GREENOUGH – Highway 200 was closed for more than six hours Saturday, Oct. 30 due to a fuel spill that covered all three lanes just past Sunset Hill Road at the top of Greenough Hill. When fire danger is low, fuels do not ignite readily from small embers but will if a more intense heat source occurs. In an effort to remove invasive water lilies from area lakes, the Clearwater Resource Council is looking forward to creating a mechanical harvester that will cut lily leaves and flowers mounted beneath a pontoon. This would allow the removal of invasive plants at a faster rate compared to non-mechanized methods. The blade would be mounted a few inches below the surface of the water. MISSOULA – After the first two weekends of big game season, west-central Montana hunter check stations show that elk harvest is off to a slow start, but hunter traffic through the stations is up from last season. The number of hunter trips through the Darby, Bonner and Anaconda check stations totaled 3,387 for the first two weekends of the season, up eight percent from this point in the 2020 season. The long talked about Salmon Lake Highway Reconstruction project appears to finally be coming to fruition. Most of this highway stretch replaced the original wagon road into Seeley Lake country in the early 1920s. Early ways into the valley were from the east and the west. Fall is the time of year blue-green algae blooms are commonly identified due to temperature patterns and end-of-summer nutrient processes. A potentially toxic algae bloom on Seeley Lake was reported to MT DEQ on Oct. 18. Unfortunately, due to reporting delays, water samples were not tested until the following Monday. The geographic and temporal sweep of Montana’s wolf trapping and snaring regulations shrank Thursday when the state Fish and Wildlife Commission approved a measure that brings those regulations into alignment with legal settlements governing management of grizzly bears and Canada lynx, two federally protected species that share habitat with wolves. The annual Trunk-or-Treat event was a great hit with local law enforcement and emergency responders along with nearly dozen trunks for children to visit.
