  • Rich Ranch celebrates its people

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Dec 21, 2023

Longtime residents, visitors and those checking out the area for the first time descended on the Rich Ranch last Sunday, Dec. 17, to celebrate another year of appreciating Montana's scenic outdoors and acknowledge all the work area residents do for each other. The idea is that we opened up our home and our hearts to others to share our passion for Montana and its great outdoors, this is just an extension of that for the community," Jack Rich, owner of the Rich Ranch, said. "We are just part of...

One person died and two people were injured in a head-on car crash in Powell County on Friday, Dec. 22, according to the Montana Highway Patrol. At around 9:30 a.m., a Subaru Outback, driven by a 34-year-old man from Missoula, was headed eastbound on Highway 200. Road conditions were reportedly icy. Around Mile Marker 55, the car negotiated a left turn and then slid into the westbound lane. The driver of the Subaru then hit a Toyota RAV4 head on. • A Christmas gift of life

    Alan Muskett, of the Pathfinder|Dec 21, 2023

Mack was flown to us at the university hospital nearly dead. He had contracted a vicious virus that had attacked his heart, and despite every available medication, a ventilator, and a cardiac assist pump, his heart failure was so severe that his organs were shutting down. Mack was sent to us in the hope that he could be saved with a heart transplant. His wife had died a year earlier, around Christmas, and now his daughter Lisa, 15, faced the loss of her remaining parent, again at Christmastime. She was alone with her desperately ill father, no...

  • Ovando play combines Christmas, Wizard of Oz

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Dec 21, 2023

The students of Ovando's school transported out of Ovando, and even Kansas, to recite the Wizard of Oz story with a Christmas twist. The school play featured musical numbers, the classic cast of the hit 1939 movie - all meshed with Christmas characters. Dena Hooker of Ovando elementary said the event was a great success "It was an enchanting evening," Hooker said. "The students worked hard, as did the teachers and staff. Teacher and staff include Andrea Tougas, Patti Bartlett, Angela Williams...

  • Goodbye from Carleen

    Carleen Gonder, Seeley Lake|Dec 21, 2023

First, I thank Andi and Nathan Bourne for making the Pathfinder an award winning newspaper that in a sense belonged to all of us. And I thank Andi and Nathan for inviting me several years ago to be a contributor to the Place For All column. My latest submission to that column in the 14 December issue was more an introduction to who and what I am, and it may be my last contribution. Most of my previous submissions dealt with our public lands and wildlife, and for my latest I had intended to write about our federal lands, my first and foremost...

  • Slow court process likely to create problems

Sen. Jason Ellsworth, Montana Senate President|Dec 21, 2023

This column could be considered an open letter to Montana judges and justices, as well as the various agencies and parties engaged in lawsuits over legislation from the 2023 and 2021 legislative sessions. It’s also meant to inform Montanans about how ongoing litigation could impact future legislative sessions and, more fundamentally, their own ability to know and understand the current laws of our state. I write today not to submit another critique of political biases and integrity within the judicial branch, which have been widely discussed t...

  • A 2023 Democrat Political Recap: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Sheila Hogan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party|Dec 21, 2023

Skyrocketing property taxes. Astronomical energy rate increases. Homes that are unaffordable to most Montanans. And yet more big tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, while the rest of us are left to foot the bill. When we look back on the last year, all these changes and more were brought you by one party and its supermajority: Montana Republicans. As 2023 ends, let’s look back over the last 12 months to see where Republicans really took us as a state. The Good. Montana Democrats at every level are speaking out, standing strong, and demanding a...

  • Psychological Perspectives: Creativity

    Ken Silvestro|Dec 21, 2023

Creativity and human nature are almost synonymous. That’s because people are creative in almost every moment. We tend to think of creativity in terms of great painters, musicians, or outstanding cultural developments, but there is much more to the creative process than meets the eye. The creative process flows from the depths of our psyche (our psychology) to our consciousness (our awareness), and then we express it in our lives. Creative expression begins with young children, as they play a...

  • Christmas: Its myth, folklore and mystery

Michelle Jenkins, Director of the Sycamore Tree Catholic Retreat Center|Dec 21, 2023

Christmas, especially an American Christmas, is “a many splendored thing.” It engages the imagination and the heart. And while it is a Christian feast – celebrating the birth of Christ - unlike other Christian feasts, it is celebrated not just by Christians but by just about everyone. And in America we start celebrating it right after Halloween! We celebrate it with fanfare and great expectations. What is an “American Christmas?” There is some myth: Santa Claus, reindeer and Christmas elves for starters. Santa Claus has his origins in a real...

  • Place For All: Wise words for your day

Claire Muller, Executive Director of Seeley Lake Community Foundation|Dec 21, 2023

Happy to fill in last minute for this week’s Place for All column. Then I got stressed about creating some incredibly wise words to share with the Seeley Lake community. Oh well, lean into your strengths. I love quotes. So here are a few good ones to get us through the end of the year. Happy holidays everyone! “Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from surviving bad judgment.” -Waldo Pritchard “A perfectionist walked into a bar. Apparently it wasn’t set high enough.” – Indian Hills Community Center “We cannot do great things...

  • Lady Blackhawks split opening home games

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Dec 21, 2023

The Seeley Swan High School girls basketball team handedly defeated Superior 51-31 on Dec. 15, but lost to Thompson Falls to split its opening home games of the 2023-2024 season. The team is looking for new experience, head coach David Cahoon said. "We're super young and so a lot of these girls haven't played high school basketball yet," Cahoon said. "[The goal was] just to get some miles on our legs, and see that the stuff that we have been working on actually works." The team went back and...

  • Boys basketball splits opening home games

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Dec 21, 2023

The Seeley Swan High School boys basketball team split its opening season games against two larger opponents last week, beating Superior High School on Dec. 15, and losing to Thompson Falls on Dec. 16. Both opposing schools are listed as Class B high schools, which is one division above Seeley Swan for size. That didn't matter to the Blackhawks against Superior, as the team led for most of the game and only allowed one point in the fourth quarter. Head Coach Mike Haines said the team had a slow...
