  • Fire district board considers firearm carry on property

    Keely Larson, Editor|Nov 28, 2024

At the beginning of October, a situation took place on Seeley Lake Fire District property where a volunteer was carrying a gun and it made someone feel uneasy. According to Fire Chief Dave Lane, the person felt intimidated that fire district volunteers could carry on district property. The fire district doesn’t have a policy in place that restricts firearms on district property. Some districts develop policies that do in their particular locations. Doing so and posting signage of the policy is not a violation of any federal laws, like the S...

  • Sewer board prioritizes elements of potential wastewater treatment locations, technologies

    Keely Larson, Editor|Nov 28, 2024

The Seeley Lake Sewer District Board spent a good portion of its November meeting etching out priorities for a potential wastewater treatment system’s location and technology. While a preliminary engineering report is still in the works, the district’s engineering consultant, Water & Environmental Technologies, or WET, walked the board through engineering matrices meant to help weigh different elements of project considerations. Typical engineering matrices use locations, scores, rankings and weights, and the combination of all results in a f...

  • Friday STEAM program ends at Seeley Lake Elementary

    Keely Larson, Editor|Nov 28, 2024

The Seeley Lake Elementary School Board voted on Nov. 18 to eliminate the Friday STEAM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, program effective Dec. 1. The program, which is designed to add extra optional science and math instruction part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program, had seen low attendance since the elementary school switched to a four-day school week this year. One concern of families as the school transitioned to four days was a reduction in childcare, lunch and educational advancement...

Seeley Lake Antler Crafts was just one of the businesses represented at the Fall Frostbite Craft Show that took place at Seeley Lake Elementary School gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 24. The craft show was planned by the Seeley...

  • Legality does not equal morality

    Diana Taylor, Seeley Lake|Nov 28, 2024

Montana’s CI-128 constitutional amendment unfortunately passed enshrining “the right to abortion.” Consider the God-given right of life for the preborn whose lives are determined by the grave choices of others, misled mothers-to-be and misinformed voters. Elections have consequences. Jesus will judge us on the choices we made. Should we do evil so good may come of it? See Romans 3:8; 6:1. Legality does not equal morality. In the 1400-1500s, the Aztecs in Mexico were idol worshippers cutting out hearts, sacrificing humans to their gods. Not t...

  • Be thankful for a well-formed conscience

Diana Taylor, Defendress of the Catholic faith|Nov 28, 2024

Wondering how anyone could engage in outrage, sacrilege and indifference against God’s law offending Him in sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance, see Genesis 4:10, 18:20-21, 19:5-13; Jude 1:7; Exodus 2:23; and James 5:4, I sought answers: “Conscience must be informed and moral judgment enlightened. A well-formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments according to reason, in conformity with the true good-willed by the wisdom of the Creator. The education of conscience is indispensable for human beings who are sub...

  • Survey requests presented at Swan Valley Community Council meeting

    Alan Muskett, for the Pathfinder|Nov 28, 2024

A snowy night, a log building and a handful of hearty citizens are the recipe for democracy in the woods. There were pickup trucks in the parking lot rather than horses, but it seemed like a meeting that could have occurred a hundred years ago. Swan Valley Community Council Chairperson Grace Siloti called the meeting to order, which wasn’t tough given this was an orderly group. John Simon, member of the Swan Valley planning subcommittee, asked the group to encourage participation in a survey by the Swan Valley Elementary School regarding p...

  • 11 ways to prep for extreme weather and power outages, part three of three

    Katie O'Reilly, for the Pathfinder|Nov 28, 2024

Remember those winds that soared across the Seeley-Swan and Potomac Valleys last January, just after temperatures dipped into the negative 20s? That winter storm created a demand for electricity that far exceeded the area utility’s supply, snowing in thousands for hours sans power, some for more than a day. Such power outages will likely only become more common, thanks to intensifying weather extremes. But before checking off the line items below, consider how the best support system for a crisis — perhaps the most renewable form of power — l...

At the Clearwater Montana Properties office here in Seeley Lake, two specific questions have been very popular over the past few months. Let’s dive in and get some answers. HOW’S THE MARKET? The real estate market in the Seeley-Swan Valley is continuing to stabilize after rapid price increases...

  • "For the Beauty of the Earth"

    Chuck Stranahan|Nov 28, 2024

Thanksgiving is never complete without my hearing the old hymn that begins with ”for the beauty of the earth.” I’ll play it on my tin whistle if I don’t hear it anywhere else. For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies. While our Civil War was at its height of desolation and carnage in 1863, a young Englishman named Folliott Sandford Pierpoint walked to the top of a hill above his village and saw leaves turning color and wildflowers dotting the meadow between him and the...
