Karen Dove's hands shake when she starts talking about what it takes to keep a rural pharmacy open. Each day, she orders drugs customers need at the Seeley Swan Pharmacy. She pays for the drugs before she gets reimbursed and before a customer uses insurance to compensate for what it doesn't pay. Dove doesn't get repaid the full cost of the drug, though, and has to choose an amount she's going to sell a drug on which she's willing to lose. Dove spends money when she's buying drugs and loses it...
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Park bear specialists are in charge of collaring a certain number of bears for research purposes. In 2016, a male grizzly nicknamed Walking Bear was captured and collared northeast of Ovando. This month that same bear was implicated in the deaths of four calves on summer pasture northeast of Ovando. Grizzly populations have been increasing in Montana over the years and the effort to delist the bears from the endangered species list has gone in and out of court...
I've been back in the Swan Valley for a little over a week now, having parked the boat in Pasadena, Maryland and prepared it for sale. Naturally, the boat market has completely tanked, with everyone trying to get rid of that impulse-buy boat from the pandemic. We have the preternatural ability to find the bottom of any market when we have something to sell. Our quick response unit in Condon had six medical calls the first four days I was back. The members suggested that I take my black cloud...
Don Larson’s Aug. 15 Pathfinder OpEd concerning Condon jumping ship from Missoula to Lake County being a no-go rings true. A 30-year stint in Seeley Lake left vivid memories of being treated like a red-headed step child by Missoula. Condonites, you have my sympathy. What did not ring true were Larson’s misleading comments concerning CSKT government and tribal membership not paying their fair share into the Lake County tax coffers while enjoying many county services. While up on his soap box, two-county homeowner Larson also took a pot shot at...
Attention water district customers: The Seeley Lake Missoula County Water District will be performing fire hydrant flushing from Tuesday Sept. 10 through Wednesday Sept. 11. During this time, you may experience a reduction of water pressure. The work will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until approximately 5 p.m. each day. It is advisable to refrain from washing laundry during this time due to a possible discoloration of water. Please contact the office at 406-677-2559 if you have any questions or concerns....
Before we were born on earth, we all lived with the Heavenly Father as His spirit children. He presented a plan to help His children learn and grow. Through His plan, we can become more like Him and be worthy to enjoy eternal life. This plan is possible because God’s Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth to suffer for our sins, a sacrifice called the Atonement. God sent us to earth, where we could have a physical body (see Genesis 1:26–27). We needed bodies to help us experience life on earth. God...
Sept. 29, 2024, marks five years since Frank Bonde passed on at the age of 90. Frank was born and raised in Pleasanton, California. Growing up in a farming family, he learned the importance of hard work and instilled those values in all that knew him. They say that when you have more years behind you than ahead of you, you begin to think differently and slow down. But that is when life really kicked into gear for Frank. And gears are something he knew a great deal about, having earned a living... Full story
Over the summer, Seeley Swan residents have experienced multiple power outages. The main electric provider for the area, Missoula Electric Cooperative, is responsible for getting the power back on when it goes out. The Pathfinder spoke with Kelsey Lodge, manager of communications at Missoula Electric Coop, about how MEC responds to power outages. In a coming edition, we'll provide an article that goes more in-depth on what resources are available in the Seeley-Swan area to residents when the pow...
These days we're having now, this little tweener season that I call late summer, is one of my favorite times. The heat of summer - and hopefully the fires and their shrouds of smoke - are winding down. Days are getting noticeably shorter and the nights are noticeably cooler. The kids are getting their last lick of vacation in before the start of school. It's 4H animal projects and county fair time, sweet corn fresh from somebody's garden or maybe a roadside stand time, and time to think about...
As the new school year begins, the lack of affordable housing casts a long shadow over Montana’s communities, especially for our teachers and students. The housing crisis is not just an economic issue — it’s a threat to the future of our state and the well-being of our children. The housing crisis hits all of us, but in this back-to-school month, the impact on our teachers and families is in full light. On the trail in western Montana, I met with Seeley Lake’s principal, who told me they had teacher openings with interested candidates, but ther...
Thirty five years ago ... Thursday Sept. 7, 1989 Griz hunt closes before season even opens The man-caused killings of six grizzly bears in northwestern Montana so far this year has prompted the closing of one grizzly bear hunting area, the Flathead Bear Management Area, before the season has had a chance to open. Each year, the state opens an area known as the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE) to a strictly controlled grizzly bear hunting season. Earlier this year, quotas for grizzly...
