SEELEY LAKE – The first community council in the state was appointed by the Missoula County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) in Seeley Lake in 1987. The community council grew out of the Seeley Lake Chamber of Commerce, said Bud Johnson, owner of Timberline Building Materials and first chair of the Seeley Lake Community Council. The first Community Council board appointed by the BCC consisted of Dan Mizner, retired; Johnson, director of the chamber; Jeff Macon, a real estate broker; Bud Berckmoes, a real estate broker; Addrien Marx, director...

  • Celebrating 60 years of love

    Haley Yarborough, Pathfinder|Jul 7, 2022

SEELEY LAKE - Carol and Jerry Miller's relationship began with a spark. On their first date as students at Ronan High School, the couple and their peers traveled to their rival's home turf of Polson, Montana to vandalize its hillside letter P. Using some tires, the group turned the P into the letter R for Ronan. Then, they lit the tires on fire. "We were never caught," Jerry said wistfully. After the first date, Carol and Jerry were partners for life. After sharing their 60th anniversary on...

SEELEY LAKE – As has been the tradition for the past 18 years, music directors from across Montana gathered at Camp Paxson for the annual Montana Bandmasters Association (MBA) Rendezvous June 20-23. The idea for the Rendezvous was birthed 19 years ago. Now retired Swan Valley School and S...

  • Reproductive rights and gun control at the local level?

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Montana|Jul 7, 2022

The primarily male U.S. Supreme Court has recently determined American women cannot decide for themselves what to do with their bodies. It trashed their reproductive rights while fiercely defending (primarily male) rights to carry an AR 15. Let’s bring this discussion down to the local level. I would very much like to know where my legislative representatives Representative Mike Hopkins and Senator Shannon O’Brien, stand on reproductive rights and gun control? What legislative actions will they initiate, defend or oppose at the Montana Leg...

  • Celebrate freedom without fireworks - support a veteran

    Jesse Chadwick, Seeley Lake, Montana|Jul 7, 2022

Dear Seeley Lake, I know you all like to celebrate the freedom you have with fireworks. Have you gone around your neighborhood and asked if anyone is a combat veteran and checked to see if fireworks negatively affect them? If you truly do value your freedom, these are the people to thank. The funny thing is, a lot of us have a Pavlovian response to the sounds fireworks produce and it’s one of the worst things to experience. It’s a little misdirected to purchase novelty explosive devices to set off if you are thankful for freedom. Buy a she...

  • Seeley-Swan Valley real estate stabilizing

Kevin Wetherell, Clearwater Montana Properties, Inc|Jul 7, 2022

THE SUMMER SLOWDOWN Following four years of a dramatic real estate market that saw rapid price appreciation, very limited inventory and multiple offers on many properties, the market has begun to stabilize. This year has seen the Federal Reserve raise rates in their effort to slow inflation. This has resulted in home mortgage rates rising from 3% in January for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage to 5.9% for the same mortgage today. This results in the monthly payment for a home purchase today to be nearly double what it was six months ago. Rising...

  • Missoula County Wildfire Smoke Ready week, July 9-16

Sarah Coefield, Air Quality Specialist, Missoula City-County Health Department|Jul 7, 2022

If there’s one thing Montanans are good at, it’s prepping for whatever nature can throw at us. We carry bear spray in the woods. We keep blankets, shovels and water in our cars. We have flashlights and candles stashed around our homes. And these days, we have a hefty supply of replacement furnace and HEPA air filters stowed away, ready for the next time wildfire smoke rolls into town. If that last sentence left you scratching your head, we’ve got you covered! This July 9-16 is Missoula County’s Wildfire Smoke Ready Week! It’s a week dedicated...

    Jean Pocha, Pathfinder|Jul 7, 2022

HELMVILLE - Mass has been suspended for one year at Helmville's St. Thomas Parish due to a shortage of priests. This is the first time mass has not been held at St. Thomas, except for during the pandemic. After one year, the situation will be re-evaluated. Bishop Rondell first rode into the Helmville Valley in 1872, with saddlebags bulging with supplies to conduct mass, said Peggy Mannix recalling her grandmother's history notes. Masses were held in the home of Thomas Coleman. When the first...

  • "Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11

Diana Taylor, Defendress of the Catholic Faith|Jul 7, 2022

The Source and Summit of the Catholic Faith is the Holy Eucharist from Scripture on the Lord's Supper when Jesus blessed and broke the bread and said, "...eat. This is my body." Taking the chalice Jesus said, "Drink....this is my blood..." (Matthew 26:26-30). Jesus said, "...my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink" (John 6:22-[55]-71). In John 6:66, many disciples thought Jesus' saying was hard, so they walked no more with Him. Salvation is a gift for those with faith who cooperate...
