  • Grizzly Sow and Three Cubs Visit Local Residence

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 7, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - After returning from a family reunion and placing the garbage in their open shed, Kathy and Bruce Graham never expected to wake up to a grizzly sow and three cubs in their trash. Living on Highway 83 south of Seeley Lake, the Grahams are typically very careful about not attracting bears to their property. However, this time Kathy wants this to be a lesson to others in the community to not be complacent. The Grahams hauled the garbage home from their family reunion at Lindberg Lake...

  • Please respect the Stars and Stripes

    Stephen L. Thompson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 7, 2016

On Tuesday, June 28 there was an article in the Missoulian newspaper about the memorial service for David Thatcher. Mr. Thatcher was one of the famed Doolittle Raiders and was a hero in every sense of the word, helping to save four of his fellow crew members after their plane crashed. Gov. Steve Bullock attended the June 27 service and ordered flags in Montana be flown at half-staff. That’s pretty straightforward. Tuesday I had occasion to run some errands downtown and was saddened to see no less than seven different flags at full staff. T...

  • Be Very Afraid

    Ron Cox, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 7, 2016

I’ve never been concerned about the chatter for transferring federal lands to the state because I always presumed those people don’t know what they are asking for. Other than being frustrated about the modern quagmire of legal challenges and budget constraints preventing everything everyone wants to do or wants done on federal public lands, I’ve never seen a specific example of what the state could do better. But recently during a road trip through the Midwest, I woke up one morning very afraid the proponents for transferring federal land...

  • Lemmings or Not!

    Ken Kronsperger, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 7, 2016

I often wonder how many times are people asked, prior to an election, "Are you a Republican or a Democrat?" We as a Nation have become so indifferent to the future of our great country that we need only to identify with an animal foreign to our shores or a jackass. This Great Nation and those that sacrificed so much to create and maintain it deserve better. If you vote for someone solely because they are a woman, a minority, an incumbent, a Republican or a Democrat, you do a great disservice to...

  • Largest Crowd in Four Years At the Seeley Parade

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 7, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - For the fourth year running, the Seeley Swan Pathfinder counted the Seeley Lake parade attendance by placing a camera on top of a Seeley Lake Rural Fire District truck in the parade. We counted 4,118 people lining the streets from the Filling Station parking lot on B Street to the end of the parade on Redwood Lane. That's the largest crowd we have counted in the last four years, beating out the 2014's count of 3,933. The lowest year's attendance was 2013 with a count of 3439. We...

  • Experience the Real Montana

Sheila Scobba Banning, Open Book Club|Jul 7, 2016

It may seem impossible to convey the majesty of Montana in words, alone, but in "Fifty-Six Counties: A Montana Journey," Russell Rowland captures the heart and soul of the state with a fistful of stories and a map. Rowland will share his book at the Open Book Club event Wednesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at Holland Lake Lodge. Everyone is invited. Equal parts cautionary tale and love letter, this book weaves Rowland's exploration of every county seat (and many towns between) into one big tapestry as...

Rachel Feigley, Seeley Lake Ranger District District Ranger|Jul 7, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Ranger District (SLRD) is bustling with activity this summer! With the arrival of summer visitors and residents and more activity on your National Forest (NF) lands that surround the communities of Seeley Lake and extend to the upper Blackfoot, it seemed timely to provide another update on the happenings at the SLRD. It is an exciting time for us because our short field season is when all the planning for logistics and budget finally pays off in work on the ground! We are actively conducting programs and projects,...

  • Honoring Those Who Served

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Jul 7, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – Jim Cearley served four years in the United States Navy, three years and three months of it at sea. He engaged in no military conflict because, as he categorizes his service time, "it was between the Korean War and the Vietnam war." But serve he did, and that was reason enough to qualify him for an Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. Cearley said all he had to do was fill out some paper work, find a guardian to accompany him – his son filled that role – and get to the Helen...

  • Count Your Many Blessings

Michelle Fife Relief Society President, Seeley Lake Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints|Jul 7, 2016

Bilbo Baggins was a simple hobbit who wanted nothing more than to sit in front of his fire and eat his soup but life had other plans for Bilbo! It took him on a wonderful journey filled with wizards and dwarfs. His adventures weren’t always fun (or safe!) but they shaped and molded his character in ways that would never have been possible otherwise. I believe life is like this, a series of journeys that we might not always want to take but never-the-less do. Along the way, the Lord shapes and molds us into the people He needs us to be. I...
