In an area where history, hindsight and remembrance are important, it's not surprising the Seeley and Swan Valleys - where at least in Seeley Lake 14.6% of the population are veterans, according to Census data - treated Memorial Day as something special, and not just a three-day weekend. The Pathfinder was able to attend three celebrations throughout the valleys, and further afield, to see how the holiday was being commemorated. From Condon, to Seeley, to Helmville, one thing was for sure - the...
Two days before graduation, Seeley-Swan High School seniors sat in the gymnasium to receive scholarships provided by local and state-wide organizations. Anywhere from $750 to over $300,000 was awarded per student. A throughline from those handing out the awards was the importance of community service and volunteerism. Steve Bowen from the Seeley Lake Lions Club said community service is what drives our lives. Mary Stone, who presented the Seeley Lake Leo Awards and the National Honors Society...
When Shelia Devins had the Seeley Elementary sixth graders as first graders in music class, they were upset after learning how sea turtles can get caught in plastic that makes its way into the ocean. At the time, it was the last week of school and there wasn't a ton of time to dive in, so Devins and the class looked at what else could be used instead of plastic, like biodegradable straws or packing peanuts. Flash forward to this school year and the sixth graders harkened back to their concerns...
About a month ago, some of the greens at the Double Arrow Golf Course were looking quite brown. Before that, pictures of the course looked like it could have been a lake frozen over due to all the ice that formed on top of the grass. Kyle Darrow has been working at Double Arrow for 17 years. He's experienced years when the dead grass post-winter was rough and generally thinks worse seasons for the course are during El Niño years when winters in the United States are generally drier. But this...
If you studied Montana history in the eighth grade many years ago, you read about the Copper Kings: Marcus Daly, William A. Clark and Augustus Heinze — the one we never remember. Clark, born in 1839, came west to work in the mining camps, ran a freight business from Salt Lake City to Montana and became a banker in Deer Lodge. In this latter role he foreclosed on mining claims in the Butte area, just when electrification in major cities back east created a huge demand for copper. Once he went off to Washington D.C. to serve in the U.S. Senate ...
I wish every little girl was blessed to have a father like Dave Kesler. A father who will train her up in the way she should go with the appropriate levels of love and discipline, and a father who will sacrifice himself to protect her. Anyone can allege wrongdoing against anyone for anything. Slanderous allegations require no special skill set. Proving the allegations through proper due process is quite a different task. None of the allegations against Dave Kesler have been proven. Not one. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Dave Kesler, a...
I am writing to support the candidacy of Representative John Fitzpatrick. John currently represents Deer Lodge and Granite Counties. As a result of the Redistricting Commission re-drawing the district boundaries he is now running for office in both Powell County and the Seeley Lake area. During the 2023 Legislature, John really looked after the interests of Deer Lodge, Powell and Granite Counties. First, he sponsored and enacted House Bill 13, the State Pay Plan bill, which provided the staff at the prison and Warm Springs with the first real...

“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25 As ancient Israel settled into the promised land their social and governmental organization was quite loose. The main feature at this time was the emergence of individuals who delivered their fellow countrymen from various oppressors, e.g. the Philistines. But it really didn’t work too well. The more serious problem was the independence of the tribes from each other, thus exposing the ancient Israelites to all sorts of social and polit...
Sunset School celebrated their end of the year celebration on May 24, the last day of school. Family and friends packed the Lubrecht Forest Pavilion for the ceremony. The ceremony celebrated the school year with individual student awards, drum music, recognition of graduates and an emotional thanks to teacher Miss Peterson. "I'd like to thank the board members and staff who provided a robust and individual school experience this year," Toni Hatten, Head Teacher, said. "I like to recognize that...
Seeley-Swan Blackhawks took on state championships for both golf and track and field before the school year wrapped up. Two golfers - Juniors Mia Nicholas and Aiden Posthumus - were successful at both Divisionals in early May and at State May 14 and 15 in Hamilton. Posthumus tied for second out of 47 men at State and Nicholas placed third out of 47 women at State. Golf Coach Colleen Stone said Nicholas was basically undefeated through the regular golf season, winning almost every meet she...
