  • Four questions for three community members six days before Pyramid's buyer deadline

    Compiled by Keely Larson, Editor|May 9, 2024

The announced closure of Pyramid Mountain Lumber on March 14 sent shock waves through Seeley Lake that extended throughout the state and various levels of government. Concern for forest health, Montana’s timber industry and Seeley Lake’s economy and longevity were top of mind. Statements came out from Montana representatives at the federal level to local county commissioners, and solutions — from worker-owned cooperatives to private buyers to a tool launched by the state Department of Labor and Industry to help match laid-off timber worke...

  • Stray dog solutions, 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease'

    Keely Larson, Editor|May 9, 2024

Loose and sometimes aggressive dogs have caused problems for some Seeley Lake residents, leaving people wondering where the solutions lie. While Missoula County doesn’t have a leash law, there are ordinances related to controlling one’s dog. Dogs must be in clear view of their owner and the owner must be able to control and recall the dog at all times. Dog owners can receive a citation for having a dog at large. Also under ordinance, dogs must be licensed in the county, which lets authorities know the dogs received rabies shots. Missoula Cou...

At a meeting in Helmville, residents and county officials listed drought, road maintenance and people that are new to the area and not as familiar with living close to fire as topics to address. The Powell County Wildfire Protection Plan is a...

  • Contacting elementary school superintendent candidates

    Steven L. Thompson, Seeley Lake|May 9, 2024

A recent Pathfinder article announced the selection of a new superintendent at the elementary school. Subsequent information indicated that the candidate declined the contract offer and the second of three interviewed candidates was offered the position. Whoever moves into the position, I wish them all the success in the world. What was disturbing to me was that the third of the three interviewees had to read the Pathfinder article to learn he had not been selected. He was not contacted by any member of the school board or their...

  • Pearson is most effective candidate for SD 46

    Neva Hassanein, Missoula, Montana|May 9, 2024

C.B. Pearson is hands down the most experienced candidate running to represent Senate District 46 in the Montana Legislature. Throughout his career, C.B. has fought for public health, environmental quality, consumer protection and campaign finance reform. He’s taken on powerful economic interests, and won many victories for Montanans. When it comes to navigating the Montana Legislature as an advocate for the public interest, C.B. is an old hand. He understands the values that Montanans share — like hard work, conservation and transparency in...

    Carrie Benton, Seeley Lake Librarian|May 9, 2024

The Blackfoot Communications Board of Trustees is awarding the Seeley Lake Branch Library $1,000 toward the purchase of a new color copier/printer. The machine will also have faxing capabilities. Thank you to everyone who shared with me about this desired resource for our community. Please note there will likely be an increase in printing fees (currently 10 cents a page) to account for the higher cost of colored ink. The public will be kept informed as to when it is ready for use and any...

  • New radar speed limit signs installed off Highway 83

    Keely Larson, Editor|May 9, 2024

New radar-operated speed limit signs were installed along Highway 83 in Seeley Lake. Bruce Friede, vice chair of the Seeley Lake Community Council, said Highway 83 is an easy highway to blast through, particularly around weekends in the summer when travelers might be just going through Seeley Lake toward Kalispell or Glacier National Park. Last summer when wait times were long for the Salmon Lake construction project, Friede said it got worse as people were likely trying to adhere to a planned itinerary. “When they picked up their speed they d...

Together we will join hearts and minds in a spirit of prayer for our community, our churches, our nation and the world. Together we will pray for healing and wholeness in every facet of life. In biblical Greek, the word that is translated as “healing and wholeness” can also be translated as “salvation.” The noun is soteria, the verb is sozo. For me, studyin...

  • Boy Scout (and river safety) motto - be prepared

    Chuck Stranahan|May 9, 2024

Safety begins with preparation. When you wade fish in streams, be they big rivers or small creeks, you stalk your fish. That usually means getting into the water, staying at angles where you are concealed, and positioning yourself away from swift currents and slippery rocks as you prepare to make your first cast. Preparation begins with respecting the swift currents and staying out of them. That's not where the trout are anyway. They're along the edges of those currents. At any time of year,...

Let’s take a deeper look into this popular form of philanthropy. Giving Tuesday — the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — is the most well-known giving day in the US. It was formed in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving seaso...

    Keely Larson, Editor|May 9, 2024

Even being the day after prom, the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks performed well at the KLH Track and Field Invite in Missoula on Saturday. This meet was hosted by Seeley-Swan High School and was in memory of Coach Mike Haines' father. Darby Gleason had a "really big" personal record in the shot put event, close to two or three feet more than her usual throws, Haines said. She's been throwing that way in practice, but just not quite during meets, he said. "We knew she could do that," Haines said. Both...
