SWAN VALLEY – Neil and Dixie Meyer of Salmon Prairie celebrated 60 years in marriage Dec. 14. They continue to live on their 160-acre property that they purchased when they were engaged, raising cattle and horses. Similar interests, a love for the outdoors and willingness to live a simplistic lifestyle are the reasons they credit for a successful marriage. While attending high school, Neil helped his father E.I. log. They supplied logs to several small sawmills in the area. Neil also drove loggi...
SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Lake turns hockey town Jan. 6-8 for the seventh annual Seeley Lake Pond Hockey (SLPH) Tournament. Much of the tournament remains the same. Again this year, participants and fans will have online access to the schedule and tournament standings. The tournament got its start with a group of locals who would get together every year to play "broomball" in Seeley Lake. The tournament is now a USA Hockey sanctioned tournament. According to SLPH Event Coordinator Megan Lindemer, at...
SEELEY LAKE - The Missoula County Commissioners have refused to give aid in preventing a gravel pit and asphalt plant that has been purposed for property on the Cottonwood Lakes Road. The Commissioners don’t seem to have any problem with these citizens paying taxes for programs such as a new Missoula Library or Missoula Parks and Trails that directly benefit the City of Missoula and a handful of county residents close to town but is of very little use to those in Seeley Lake and other outer areas of the County. If the commissioners are not c...
I am from the heavy breathing, the feet slapping the track One lap, two laps, three laps, four. And I cross the finish line I am from the woods, the trees speaking to me as they dance to the beat of their needles swaying in the cold-hearted wind I am from the green grass of the meadows, of the birds of prey flying way up high in the gray glass of the sky Where God drops black broken hearts into the mix to make my thoughts darker, and my heart harden. I am from a dad trying and failing, trying...
As a follow-up to the previous article describing groups and collectives, I want to describe the differences between social Self and individual Self. A social Self is directly related to groups and collectives. This means that a person's social identity, or Self, is based on group membership. Since groups or collectives have specific values, beliefs, mannerisms, dress styles, languages and more, a member typically adopts most, if not all, of the group's characteristics as her/his social Self....

SWAN VALLEY – Since the early 2000s, Northwest Connections (NwC) led a two-month course called Landscapes and Livelihood. It introduced college students from all over the country to ecology and community-based conservation in the Swan Valley. Following the merger of NwC and Swan Ecosystem Center, Swan Valley Connections (SVC) continues to teach the course that promotes the triple bottom line: healthy ecology, healthy community and healthy economy. NwC was founded in 1997 by Tom and Melanie P...
National media outlets have reported in the last few years a "volunteer crisis" where the perfect storm of circumstances has left entire communities with no emergency medical technicians (EMT) or firefighters. The Montana State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) says there is an extreme shortage of volunteer firefighters across the state. With 400 of Montana's 435 fire departments relying solely on volunteers, the response time varies significantly and the call could go unanswered if no one is...
In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is so prevalent that when someone presents with fever and body aches, they are presumed to have malaria until proven otherwise. It's kind of the same here during influenza season. While we've had just a few cases of influenza here in Seeley Lake so far this year, the combination of fever, body aches (and headache), and cough make you really suspicious for influenza. Thankfully, we've done a pretty good job as a community of getting vaccinated. So for everyone who...
SEELEY LAKE – A photograph taken at Seeley Lake Campground by Laurie Bender made the #YondersOfTheYear2016 for the month of December. Bender, who was raised in Seeley Lake, was excited to see her photograph place a small dot on Seeley Lake amongst all the other photos from around the world. Bender, daughter of Addrien Marx, grew up in Seeley Lake. She said she spent countless days at the beach at Seeley Lake Campground and has always enjoyed hiking. While she is relatively new to photography, h...
In 1897, President Grover Cleveland established the Lewis and Clark Forest Reserve under the provisions of the Forest Reserve Act. At that time, the reserves were administered by the Department of the Interior. In 1905, the Forest Service was created along with the Department of Agriculture and in 1907 the Forest Reserves became known as National Forests. Until 1910, Glacier National Park was part of the Lewis and Clark National Forest Reserve; then the area was given national park status. On Au...

BBB Advises Consumers to Use Caution When Hiring a Locksmith MISSOULA — Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving the Northwest has received numerous complaints regarding locksmiths who aren’t upfront about their fees. The latest comes from a company out of California that serves as a referral service, which enlists contractors to do the actual work. Customers have complained that the price quoted is lower than what is actually charged. While there are legitimate locksmith businesses, consumers should be mindful of pricing gimmicks that can tri...
Have you ever had “one of those days?” You know the kind. No matter what you set out to do it seems that everything goes wrong. I know I have. Sometimes, it seems they come in bunches – like bananas! My Dad was a great example to me during those times. For him, the glass was always at least half full, rather than half empty. In fact, for him it seemed the glass was always completely full. As a child of the 1960’s and 70’s however, I was not so sure. I bought in to the rhetoric of the time and always seemed to be having one of those days. Seeing...
