She said she had a story that she really needed to get published to help warn other people her age about the dangers of the Internet. Typically all students work with a Junior Journal coach but because she wanted it published that week, I agreed to work with her. By that evening I had the story which required very few edits. Her willingness to call, self-motivation and drive to produce a s...

  • Some history and my time

    Dale Terrillion|Jan 3, 2019

Many moons ago we lived for a spell in the old Mount Emily railroad logging camp near Starkey, Ore., not far from Ukiah. Anyway, I was cutt'n timber up the Grande Ronde River. It paid 57 cents a log – we had to hustle. We ended up near an old gold mine. The lumber from the camp had long been packed away. Except for one. It was the house of ill repute. I guess no one wanted to admit whatever they rebuilt with it where the lumber came from. The road was maintained by the Forest Service. Every t...

  • Protecting a bridge to the Bitterroots

    Matt Hart, Vital Ground Foundation|Jan 3, 2019

When a federal judge returned grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone area to the threatened species list in September, he cited the bears' fragmented range in the lower 48 states as one of his justifications. It is hard to call a species recovered, he argued, when it is isolated from other wild populations, as Yellowstone's grizzlies are. Earlier this month, two conservation groups took an important step to ending that isolation. Twenty miles west of Missoula, near the confluence of western...

  • Christian "Hokey Pokey"

William Campbell, Elder, Mission Bible Fellowship|Jan 3, 2019

For those of us who are old enough to remember the song “Hokey Pokey” you may remember the words went something like this, “You put your right foot in, you put your left foot out, then you do the Hokey Pokey and you shake it all about.” Why in the world did this song from years ago suddenly pop into my mind? I’m guessing it’s because I was reflecting on the scripture verses, both in the Psalms and in the book of James that talk about a “double minded man.” These verses reminded me that Christians often try to live with one foot in their faith...

  • A change is needed

    Nancy Ballance - HD87, Hamilton, Mont.|Jan 3, 2019

Thank God a group of Republican legislators have taken the initiative to rid Montana House of Representatives of a 30-year supermajority experiment that has contributed to hyper-partisanship disdained by most of Montana's citizens. The Montana constitution defines only a few cases when a legislative supermajority vote is needed, for example: before spending trust funds, amending the constitution or overriding a governor's veto. Nowhere does the constitution suggest the legislature should adopt supermajority rules that limit debate and centraliz...
