In the past, God has always provided the subject well in advance when I write an article for the Pathfinder. This time He waited until it was nearly due and it came in the form of an email from an old friend. In my US Air Force days I was stationed in Japan for about three years in the early 1970s at which time I attended the base chapel and taught adult Bible classes. My wife and I became close friends with another couple by the name of Tom and Cathy. I have maintained occasional contact with them over the years and it was from Tom that I rece...
Of all the subjects being discussed today, the one most polarizing is abortion. As a Christian I believe all abortions are an affront to God. This is clearly spelled out in the Scriptures. Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Psalm 139:13 states, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” Jesus stated in Luke 20:25 for us to “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God...
You may be old enough to remember that song by the Beatles. It was released in 1967 as a single and quickly swept the world. Just for fun I “Googled” the question “How many songs have been written with love in the title?” I did not receive a good answer. There was one person that counted the “love” songs in his collection and it came to 1,187…quite a large number for one person. As a society we use the word love to describe many emotions, events, persons, animals, etc. The list is endless. I want to share with you the true meaning of th...
I believe we can all agree that the truth is a very elusive commodity in this day and age. It is rare that you get the same story on TV, newspapers, internet or radio as most of the stories seem to be slanted toward a particular agenda or thinking. It’s called “spinning the news” by omitting pertinent facts or statements that don’t allow the receiver to get the whole story. You know what I mean. We all experience this every day. Truth is often defined as “that which conforms to reality, fact or actuality” but this definition leaves many questio...
One of the most challenging actions a person can take is to thoroughly examine themselves in the light of Scripture. Isn’t it always easier to point out the shortcomings of others rather than truly recognize the problems with ourselves? Self-examination is a Biblical principal. 2 Corinthians 13:5 states: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-unless, of course, you fail the test?” Jesus made it very plain that self-inspection is part of the Christian life when...
Its turkey time again! If you are like most people a big meal with family or friends is the big cause for celebration on this national holiday. With a full stomach we settle on the couch to watch a football game or two and hopefully stay awake the whole time. But are we missing the point of the day of celebration? Probably so. Reflecting on the original words of the 1863 Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln we read: “It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart a...
You are a very rare person, indeed, if you have never faced a difficult time in your life such as death of a loved one, divorce, loss of home, unemployment…etc. I could list many possible events in your life that would give you extreme sorrow in some way or another. Just look at the tragedies that are in the newspaper every day that kill or severely injure thousands of people. I can’t remember how many times people have asked the question “Why would a loving God allow that to happen” after a major loss of life has occurred. After all, isn’t G...
I have fond memories of singing in a choir during a Christmas program when I was in the fourth grade in a small east Texas town. In order to be in the choir, you had to learn all the words to most Christmas carols. No one complained that we sang about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ nor were there complaints that a large Christian cross was hung on the auditorium stage. Things were different then and even though WW II was in progress we were looking forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior. I believe we knew what Christmas was all...
