As a U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Vietnam era, I appreciate the service of all members of the armed forces, past and current. However, I am seriously disappointed and a bit disgusted with those members of the armed forces in Sheehy’s recent ad. They are standing against the man who has done the most for Montana veterans — brought us clinics, got care for those exposed to Agent Orange, etc. They are promoting what will be a very junior senator over a very senior and powerful one who has done good things for veterans and Montana and will con...
The people of Montana have elected: · Our Governor, who is from California, · Our junior Senator, also from California, · A Representative, from Maryland. All three are wealthy and have shown a general disregard for what the people of Montana care about and who want to sell our public lands to the highest bidder because they have no feeling of “ownership” in these lands without deeds in their names. In addition, we have a wealthy Representative (who has shown a disregard for transparency or conserving public money and spends most of his time o...
Dear Greg, You are now the leader of a group of Montanans (and Montana wannabes like you) who think wearing a necktie, which serves no purpose, is more important than wearing a mask in a pandemic, which saves lives. In addition, you are the leader of those who profess less government (except for those not in the group), lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy (which should, but never does, trickle down to the masses - refer to Michigan and Kansas) and personal responsibility. I suggest you and your clan put your actions where your mouth...
I have known Tom Browder for quite some time and have found him to be an interesting, energetic person. Now, he wants to serve the eastern area of Missoula County in the State Legislature. In my opinion, this is good for both this area and the state of Montana. Tom is a very thoughtful person who wants to help make a great place even better. People in the Seeley, Swan area know Tom as a person involved in the community and working for progress in the areas of: a strong public education system; quality healthcare; affordable housing and keeping...
For nearly four years Missoula County Sheriff TJ McDermott has worked tirelessly to provide our community with a Sheriff’s Office that we can be proud of and trust. McDermott has led his staff to accomplish a lot in his first term. All of the expired and outdated safety equipment left by the previous administration has been updated to ensure the deputies and detention officers may do their jobs more safely. Going forward, this equipment has been properly included in the public safety budget. Working with the Commissioners, Sheriff McDermott i...
It appears that our most recently elected Secretary of State has revised his job description to read, “Persecutor of perceived voter fraud in Missoula County, Montana – only Missoula County.” According to his letter in the Missoulian, Corey Stapleton thinks a single instance of possible fraud constitutes the need for him to make sarcastic, mis-leading statements about the Missoula County Elections Administration’s ability to run an election. Let’s put a few publicly available facts on the table (something Corey failed to do): First, there wer...
MISSOULA - I read in the paper recently that the Missoula Sheriff’s Office donated money to the jail diversion program. I want to commend the Sheriff on having the foresight to take available funds and apply them in such an action. By supporting a movement to take or keep a portion of the jailed population out of the jail, he has helped the Missoula County taxpayers as much as he has helped the offenders and his own department. First, by removing some of the jail population, administration of the jail is made more manageable. Second, by s...
I am supporting Dave Strohmaier for Missoula County Commissioner. One reason I support Dave is his stand on social justice, which means promoting the common good as demonstrated in his co-sponsoring the Missoula City Non-Discrimination Ordnance. It also means taking care of the poor, the sick and the hungry so they too may be valuable, contributing members of our society. Additionally, social justice means environmental justice – that the lowest income people aren’t left alone to deal with the negative impacts of industry, such as the Mil...
MISSOULA - This year I had the opportunity to participate in the processing of mail-in ballots for Missoula County in the 2016 primary elections. I was one of 42 people selected to remove ballots from the blue, secret envelopes and unfold them so they could be fed to the vote counting machines. I was impressed with the percentage of ballots returned this year as compared to previous years – per the Missoulian. I am sure people who mail in their ballots really want to have a voice in government, so I was disappointed in how many of the b...
MISSOULA - Several months ago the two voting Commissioners selected Stacy Rye as the best person – on their very first ballot – and appointed her to fill the third Commissioner’s position. Now, after working with her for only seven months, one Commissioner has said Stacy’s management style is not a good fit for the Commission and has endorsed Dave Strohmaier. The other Commissioner is not endorsing Stacy. A county board that appears to have become dysfunctional in such a short time does not bode well for an effective county government over th...
Last year after Missoula County Commissioner Bill Carey announced he was retiring mid-term, the Missoula Democratic Central Committee held a forum which resulted in three people being nominated for presentation to the Board of Commissioners. The two voting Commissioners agreed to APPOINT Stacy Rye on the first ballot. Now, after working with Stacy for seven-plus months, one Commissioner has endorsed Dave Strohmaier and the other has NOT endorsed Stacy. To me that means Stacy does not play well with others and that she has created what will be...
I met both 2016 commissioner candidates long before they were candidates and I have chosen to support Dave Strohmaier for the following reasons. Teamwork to Dave means working together with the other Commissioners to resolve disagreements and make the best decisions for Missoula County. It means developing good working relations with staff members and department heads, motivating staff and department heads to put forth their ideas without fear, developing a consensus or acceptable compromise and moving forward with the group’s decision as d...
